Literary Las Vegas: Alberto Hazan
Local emergency health physician Alberto Hazan is the author of the recently released medical thriller “Dr. Vigilante.” The novel follows an emergency room doctor who goes after the psychopaths — the child molesters, wife beaters and rapists — who wrong his patients.
“I wrote the book to raise awareness about the unfortunately high prevalence of these atrocious acts in our communities,” Hazen said.
After graduating from Harvard University, Hazan attended Stony Brook Medical School and trained in emergency medicine at St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital in New York City. Since then, he has worked in clinics and hospitals in Morocco, Nepal, Mexico, Nicaragua and Haiti and now Las Vegas.
Hazan is also the author of the young adult fantasy “The League of Freaks and the Secret Key.”

Acting like a tired drunk coming home from a long night, Robert crossed the street. He pretended to search for his keys as he glanced back. The men were still in the mouth of the alley, one inert, the other writhing slowly. He looked around to assure himself that no one had taken notice, then dropped the drunk act, leapt up, and grabbed the rust-flaked bottom rung of the fire-escape ladder. He climbed swiftly up the moonlit stairs.
At forty-three, Robert was still quick. Then again, he wasn’t a typical forty-something. He was built like an All-American linebacker with the agility of an Olympic gymnast. Most importantly, he’d been schooled in street fighting and modern warfare by Guillermo Martinez, one of the fiercest freedom fighters in Central America.
