Girl Scouts of Southern Nevada plan expo Aug. 31
Last year, the Girl Scouts of Southern Nevada brought its World of Girls Expo to Cashman Center for the first time. This year, the organization is bringing it back Aug. 31, and it plans for it to be bigger and better.
“We’d been doing a smaller version for four or five years at our own facility,” said Emily Smith, chief marketing and development officer for Girl Scouts of Southern Nevada. “With the help of the 51s (baseball team), we were able to make it bigger and bring it to Cashman. Last year, we had over 35,000 people at the event.”
Chuck Johnson, general manager of the 51s, downplayed his organization’s role.
“We’re just helping out with our contacts at Cashman Center to facilitate use of the center for the event,” Johnson said. “We have a really strong history of partnership with the Girl Scouts.”
The event is set to be divided into separate “worlds,” such as “Healthy Living World” and “Environmental World.” Each world is sponsored by a local business. There also will be vendor booths throughout the exposition.
“We ask our vendors to do a hands-on activity, something the kids can take away,” Smith said. “It’s not just a matter of grabbing a flier and moving on.”
The event is set to fill half of Cashman Center, 850 Las Vegas Blvd. North, and the organizers plan to triple the number of stages for speakers and entertainers.
“In addition to the main stage, we’re adding two cafe-style stages,” Smith said. “One will be a leadership cafe with different woman speakers who are in leadership roles in the community. The other will be a financial literacy cafe, which is more geared towards teens.”
Smith said that although the free event is open to everyone, organizers are hoping to bring in more teens this year and give them tangible resources they can take with them.
“I’m very excited about our ‘Financial Literacy World,’ ” Smith said. “Teens and their families will have the opportunity to learn about how to get college scholarships and how to save. They’ll learn how to establish good credit and get their first credit card.”
The guests and speakers are set to include Assemblywoman Irene Bustamante Adams, Congresswoman Dina Titus and Hilary Billings, Miss Nevada United States, who is also a travel blogger on thenomadgrad.com.
“Mad Science will be there, and we’ll have entertainment and celebrity characters,” said Renee Guglielmetti, marketing and development director for Girl Scouts of Southern Nevada. “It’s the premier event for girls to try something new, take on a challenge and find out more about all the cool things in Southern Nevada.”
The World of Girls Expo is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 31. Admission is free. For more information, visit girlscoutsnv.org and click on “Special Events.” Tickets for the 51s game set to follow the event are $7 on the website and include a 51s baseball cap and admission to a meet-and-greet with the players scheduled from 4 to 6 p.m.
