TEACHERS CAN GET FREE ADMISSION
AT NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC EXHIBIT

Teachers in Clark County will receive free admission to the “50 Greatest Photographs of National Geographic” exhibit at The Venetian through July. Teachers must show school identification at the Imagine Exhibitions Gallery box office. The exhibit is open from 9:30 a.m. to 7 p.m., with the last ticket sold at 6 p.m. General admission is $16 and locals, military personnel and seniors are $13, not including taxes and fees.

SCHOOL DISTRICT TO PROVIDE
SUMMER LESSONS ONLINE

The Clark County School District is offering online learning activities and resources for parents and students to do over the summer. Families with students in 12th grade or younger can access grade-appropriate activities in math and reading at ccsd.net/district/summer-learning-guides.

The lessons are available in English or Spanish.

FOUNDATION SEEKS EXCHANGE STUDENT HOST FAMILIES

Face the World Foundation is registering volunteer host families for the fall semester of high school. Host families provide a loving home, meals and a bed while learning firsthand about another culture and establishing friendships that will last a lifetime. The nonprofit foundation provides a community representative for the host family and the student during his time in the United States. SUMMER WRITING CAMPS
AVAILABLE TO STUDENTS

The Southern Nevada Writing Project plans Summer Youth Writing Camps for students of all grade levels June 17-28. The camp for students entering grades seven through 12 is scheduled from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. at Spring Valley High School, 3750 S. Buffalo Drive. Students entering grades one through six can choose Schorr Elementary School, 11420 Placid St., or Simmons Elementary School, 2328 Silver Clouds Drive. Elementary school classes are scheduled from 9 a.m. to noon.

The camp is $250 and open to students of all skill levels. Instructors at the camp will be teacher consultants for the SNWP.

SCHOOL BOARD TRUSTEE RECOGNIZED
BY NEVADA STATE COLLEGE

Clark County School Board Trustee Linda Young, who represents District C, recently received the Nevada State College President’s Medal, which recognizes community members who make significant contributions to the college’s development.

SHORT STORY CONTEST OPEN
TO YOUNG AUTHORS

Aspiring authors ages 14 to 22 can apply for a chance to have their work published as part of a compilation book to be sold at amazon.com.

Applications for the Gateway Arts Foundation’s Helen Hearne Literary Scholarship are being accepted through Aug. 1. Applicants can submit a short story in fiction or nonfiction of 14,000 to 21,000 words. The story must have a theme or central focus of Nevada or any town in Nevada throughout the story. Three award classifications will be given based on age.

BRACKEN ELEMENTARY’S KATIE DECKER NAMED PRINCIPAL OF THE YEAR

Katie Decker, principal at Bracken Elementary School, 1200 N. 27th St., was named Principal of the Year by Magnet Schools of America, the national association for magnet schools. Decker became principal of Bracken in 2001. Bracken’s curriculum focuses on science, technology, engineering, arts and math, and it is one of the highest-achieving schools in the Clark County School District.

WENGERT ELEMENTARY RECEIVES
HIGH PROGRESS AWARD

Wengert Elementary School, 2001 Winterwood Blvd., was named the High Progress Reward School by the Nevada Department of Education for having the highest level of student growth during the past three years. The school’s 75 teachers received more than $56,000 in gift cards to The Public Education Foundation’s Teacher EXCHANGE resource center for classroom supplies.
