sawyer middle school Students visit site of Red Rock Canyon graffiti

Students from Sawyer Middle School, 5450 Redwood St., visited Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area to see the Native American rock art that was vandalized in November.

Led by social studies teacher Lynn Zepeda, the students for an anti-graffiti group raised about $200 in donations to aid in the clean up and restoration efforts. Friends of Red Rock Canyon and the Bureau of Land Management arranged the visit.

Female veterans to discuss trauma of war, life after

The second annual UNLV Combat Trauma Conference is scheduled from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. May 25 and 8 a.m. to noon May 26 at the Richard Tam Alumni Center at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, 4505 S. Maryland Parkway .

Female veterans will discuss the emotional trauma of combat during the conference for medical professionals, counselors, legislators and veterans groups. The conference is designed to help professionals understand the problems and develop solutions for issues facing female veterans such as post traumatic stress disorder, substance abuse, military sexual trauma, homelessness, physical health and family trouble.

Speakers scheduled to appear include retired Brig. Gen. Rebecca Halstead, retired Col. Kim Olson, author of "Iraq and Back "; Elizabeth Gifford of the VA Palo Alto Health Care System and U.S. Representatives from across the country.

Paradise Elemenary school teacher receives Presidential Award

Paradise Elementary School teacher Arlene Hayman was recognized with the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching.

She will receive an all-expenses-paid trip to Washington, D.C., for an awards ceremony and $10,000 from the National Science Foundation. Hayman was one of 85 teachers honored nationwide.

Kindergarten through fifth-grade students can win $529 for college

Students in kindergarten through fifth grade can enter the Nevada $529 College Savings Day Contest for a chance to win $529 to be used to open a college savings account or enhance an existing account.

The theme of the contest is "I want to go to college so I can become a … " Students must complete the sentence and submit a drawing or an essay of 50 words or less about their career ambition. Entries must be received by the state treasurer’s office by Friday .

Public Education Foundation plans charity golf tournament

The Public Education Foundation’s 11th annual Tee Up for Kids Charity Golf Tournament is scheduled for 7:30 a.m. June 2 at Spanish Trail Country Club, 5050 Spanish Trail Lane.

Playing spots are available for $300 and foursomes for $1,200, with proceeds going to Nevada public schools through the foundation’s various programs.

Tournament activities will include hole-in-one and closest-to-the-pin contests, tee prizes, trophies and an awards luncheon.

Nevada Homeschool Expo coming in June

The third annual Nevada Homeschool Expo is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. June 11 at Lied Memorial Boys & Girls Club, 2850 Lindell Road.

The expo will include information on curriculum, workshops, guest speakers, exhibits and live demonstrations.

Teachers can seek funding online for class projects

Local school teachers can apply for donations for classroom projects through donorschoose.org.

The nonprofit website, founded in 2000, allows public school teachers to describe specific educational projects for students, and donors choose the projects they want to support. More than 160,000 teachers have secured more than $71 million worth of books, art supplies and technology resources.

Locally, more than 150 teachers have used the website to secure more than $119,000 in funding. Teacher Leanna Kromer from O’Callaghan Middle School, 1450 Radwick Drive, has funded eight classroom projects totaling more than $2,000 since January.

INSTITUTE TO GIVE GRANTS TO PROSPECTIVE MEDICAL ASSISTANTS

The Medical Skills for Life Institute is offering 10 $2,000 scholarships and 10 $500 tuition grants to the first 20 students who are enrolled and accepted to the institute through Sept 1. These scholarships are for people looking to become medical assistants or phlebotomists.

World Heritage Student Exchange seeks host families

The World Heritage Student Exchange program is seeking host families in the Las Vegas Valley for high school boys and girls.

Couples, single parents and families with or without children are welcome to apply. Students can be hosted for a semester or for a school year.

Cultural Diversity Foundation offers scholarships

The Cultural Diversity Foundation is offering college scholarships ranging from $1,500 to $2,500.

Students must be Clark County residents, maintain a 3.0 GPA and show financial need.

The foundation also plans to host online workshops with tips on how to search and locate scholarship awards online. The class is open to college-bound high school students and college students.
