Dining Pick of the Week: Stephano’s Greek and Mediterranean Grill

Stephano’s has been a popular restaurant near the University of Nevada, Las Vegas for 15 years because of its good food, quick service and large selection of Mediterranean food and imported beers. Among the salads, made with tomatoes, onions, cucumbers, house dressing and pita bread, are Greek, beef and lamb gyro, falafel, chicken gyro, and filet mignon. Popular sandwiches are garlic chicken on ciabatta, grilled chicken breast wrapped in pita, tri-tip steak shawarma in pita with tomatoes, onions and tahini sauce, and kofta, ground beef patties in pita with Israeli salad and hummus. Featured entrees are spinach pie with two stuffed grape leaves, vegetarian combo (spinach pie, stuffed grape leaves, falafel, hummus, tabbouleh), steak or chicken kabobs, grilled chicken and soujouk (sausage) panini on French bread. Several Greek specialties are vegetarian moussaka (layered eggplant, potatoes, spiced mushrooms topped with béchamel sauce) and pasticcio, where macaroni is layered with spiced meat, Greek seasonings and topped with béchamel. There are rice bowls, low-carb dishes and a kids menu. Desserts include baklava, rice pudding and grilled Nutella pita. Salads begin at $6.99 and sandwiches at $6.24.
