Dining pick of the week: Island Sushi and Hawaiian Grill

Sushi and Hawaii go together. Hawaiians know fresh fish, and the state has an Asian population of 40 percent. Combine the two and you get Island Sushi and Hawaiian Grill. Sushi includes crab, ahi tuna, sea urchin, freshwater eel, octopus, snapper, halibut, salmon roe and sweet shrimp. Popular breakfasts are Hawaiian sweet bread French toast, Loco Moco (hamburger patty and two eggs with brown gravy), fried rice omelet, breakfast sandwich with choice of Portuguese sausage, Spam or ham and the Japanese Plate with seared garlic ahi or mackerel with eggs and miso soup. Among the sandwiches are Kalua pig and cabbage, teriyaki hamburger, Kalbi short rib and the Players Club with chicken, ham and bacon. Dinner specialties are hibachi grilled salmon, crispy bone-in pork chop and Japanese curried braised oxtail stew. There are soups, salads, pupu platters, noodle dishes and bento plates. Featured desserts are warm brownie à la mode, tempura ice cream and Malassada Sundae, with vanilla ice cream and warm cinnamon sugar topped with strawberry and guava sauce. Dinners begin at $13.95 and breakfasts at $3.99. Island Sushi is open from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 7 a.m. to 1 a.m. Friday and Saturday. — Jack Bulavsky
