Clark County issues dust advisory for Las Vegas Valley

Las Vegas Valley residents should expect dusty days as strong mid-week winds are expected to kick up sand and dirt.

Clark County issued a valley-wide air quality advisory along with the National Weather Service’s high wind advisory in the west valley.

Winds didn’t hit the expected 60 miles per hour near the Spring Mountains and Red Rock area Tuesday afternoon. The biggest wind gusts reported were about 45 mph in Nye County. In Clark County, 37 mph was the biggest gust, according to the weather service.

The county asked construction site operators in Las Vegas and outlying areas to take precautionary measures to prevent blowing dust. The Department of Air Quality monitors dust levels and posts alerts on the county’s forecast page if dust reaches unhealthy levels.

Blowing dust can irritate respiratory diseases. People with medical problems such as bronchitis and asthma, young children and the elderly, are advised to stay indoors.

Wednesday night was expected to be windier than Tuesday was, and would bring a brief drop in temperature to the low 70s.
