Candidates can file for Clark County Commission beginning Monday

It’s off to the races Monday as filing opens for candidates for four Clark County Commission seats.

Commission hopefuls have until March 18 to declare their candidacy. Filing must be done in person at the Clark County Government Center Pueblo Room. Filings will be accepted on weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

All incumbents Marilyn Kirkpatrick, Steve Sisolak, Lawrence Weekly and Larry Brown have said they plan to defend their turf.

Kirkpatrick is the newest commissioner, appointed by Gov. Brian Sandoval in August to replace Tom Collins, who quit suddenly. Kirkpatrick had a long legislative career, which began in 2004. In 2013, she was elected speaker of the Assembly.

Kirkpatrick, a Democrat, raised $611,691 in 2015, according to annual campaign expense report records.

Las Vegas City Councilman Steve Ross is challenging Kirkpatrick.

Ross, a Democrat, raised $527,573 in 2015, according to the campaign expense records.

Commission Chairman Sisolak, a Democrat, was elected in 2008. He was elected by the commission to serve as chairman in 2013. Before his time on the commission, Sisolak served 10 years on the NevadaSystem of Higher Education Board of Regents.

Sisolak raised $1,783,852 in 2015, according to the campaign expense records.

Weekly, a Democrat, spent seven years as a Las Vegas councilman before becoming a county commissioner. Former Gov. Jim Gibbons appointed Weekly to the commission in 2007. Weekly won the seat twice.

Weekly raised $273,359 in 2015, according to the campaign expense records.

Vice Chairman Brown, a Democrat, began serving on the commission in 2009 and was re-elected in 2012. Before joining the commission, he served on the Las Vegas City Council.

Brown raised $311,654 in 2015, according to the campaign expense records.

The 2016 primary is June 14. Early voting will be May 28 to June 10. The general election is Nov. 8. Early voting is Oct. 22 to Nov. 4.
