California man killed while crossing I-15

A 26-year-old man died Thursday morning after being hit by a Jeep while trying to cross Interstate 15 at the Russell Road exit. The accident happened just before 5 a.m., according to the Nevada Highway Patrol.

Trooper Loy Hixson said two men from California were trying to cross the highway when one of the men was struck by a Jeep traveling south.

The man was taken to University Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. The other man was taken to UMC and will be OK.

It’s unknown why the men tried to cross the highway when there was an overpass at Russell.

"There’s construction there (at Russell), but it’s still open and available to pedestrians," Hixson said. "Being from out of state, there’s a possibility they weren’t familiar with the area."

On Friday, a 46-year-old man was killed when he tried to cross I-15 at Flamingo Road.
