Bicyclist struck, killed by vehicle near South Point

A man on a bicycle died after being hit by a car near Las Vegas Boulevard South on Friday.

Nevada Highway Patrol spokesman Loy Hixson said the collision occurred about 4:20 p.m. near the intersection of Las Vegas Boulevard South and Frias Avenue, which is a few blocks south of the South Point casino.

A man in his early 40s was riding his bike in the right southbound shoulder of Las Vegas Boulevard, when a 36-year-old woman driving a Nissan sedan struck him from behind, Hixson said. The bicyclist went up onto the hood, over the windshield and stayed on top of the car until the driver slowed down. Then he was thrown from the vehicle.

The bicyclist was taken to University Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

The driver was arrested on the scene. Hixson said troopers suspect the woman was impaired by drugs or alcohol.
