Aircraft makes emergency landing at Creech
An aircraft that experienced “an in-flight emergency” landed safely Thursday at Creech Air Force Base at Indian Springs, 45 miles northwest of Las Vegas, base spokeswoman Capt. Stephani Schafer said in an email.
Schafer didn’t say what type of aircraft experienced the in-flight emergency. The Nevada Highway Patrol said the landing happened about 10 a.m.
Creech is a hub for remotely piloted aircraft operations for such drones as RQ-1 and MQ-1 Predators, and the larger MQ-9 Reapers. The planes are flown from the base for training and testing, controlled by pilots and sensor operators who sit at computer consoles in ground stations. Sometimes they carry Hellfire missiles, and smart bombs in the case of Reapers.
Overseas combat missions involving drones controlled via satellite links are also conducted at the Creech base.
