The old Unit 1 nuclear reactor from the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station near Camp Pendleton, California, is shown as it is extracted from the facility in 2002. The carbon steel turned blue because of heat in excess of 650 degrees generated during the generation of electricity. It produced electricity from Jan. 1, 1968, when the plant began operation until 1992. It was removed from the plant 10 years later and has been stored in a carbon steel jacket at teh site for the past 18 years. (SONGS photo)
