9/11 COMMEMORATIVE EVENTS

The Interfaith Council of Southern Nevada will present “Interfaith Remembrance 10th Anniversary of 9/11” featuring keynote speaker Maureen Peckman, a member of the Nevada Commission on Homeland Security, at 6:30 p.m. Sunday in the student union ballroom at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, 4505 S. Maryland Parkway. The free event will feature participation from various faiths throughout the community (895-9303).

The Chancel Choir of First Presbyterian Church of Las Vegas and the Desert Chorale will present Gabriel Faure’s “Requiem” at 3 p.m. Sunday in commemoration of the 10th anniversary of 9/11. The church is at 1515 W. Charleston Blvd. A freewill offering will be accepted (384-4554).

The Islamic Society of Nevada, 4730 E. Desert Inn Road, will have a 9/11 Remembrance Service at 5:15 p.m. Sunday. The service will feature a candlelighting ceremony, and guest speakers will include the Rev. Gard Jameson, Interfaith Council of Southern Nevada; Daniel Bogden, U.S. attorney for the District of Nevada; and Aslam Abdullah, the Islamic Society of Nevada director. The service is open to the public.

The Peoples Valley Chorus and Green Valley Presbyterian Church will present “Brahms Requiem — 9.11.01 Commemoration” at 7:30 p.m. today at 1798 Wigwam Parkway, Henderson. The event is free, but a freewill offering will be accepted (454-8484).

Gateway Arts Foundation will present “A Tribute to Our Country” at 3 p.m. Sunday at Grace in the Desert Episcopal Church, 2004 Spring Gate Lane. The concert will feature the Kid Fiddlers, Vic Moea, Alex Christopher and others. Tickets are $15. For reservations, call 255-0695.

MUSIC

Mountain View Presbyterian Church, 8601 Del Webb Blvd., will present a family concert and gospel sing featuring Larry Morbitt of “Phantom — The Las Vegas Spectacular” and Tim Harvey at 3 p.m. Sept. 18. Admission is free, but a freewill offering will be accepted. (341-7800).

SERVICES

The Center for Spiritual Living, 1420 E. Harmon Ave., will have a Celebration of Peace with the Rev. Cyndi DeLong 7-8:30 p.m. Sept. 21. The service will feature music, inspirational readings and meditation (739-8200).

EVENTS

The women of Holy Trinity A.M.E. Church will celebrate their annual Women’s Day 10 a.m.-2:30 p.m. Sunday. The event will feature guest speaker Rita Howard at 10 a.m. and minister Lisa Franqui at 2:30 p.m., at 700 Lola Ave., North Las Vegas (877-0790).

The Youth Group of Green Valley Presbyterian Church will have a swap meet 7 a.m.-noon today at 1798 Wigwam Parkway, Henderson (454-8484).

The Jewish Community Center of Southern Nevada will present “Where Art Thou 2,” featuring five artists displaying their artwork, at 7 p.m. Thursday at Bar + Bistro at the Arts Factory, 107 E. Charleston Blvd. The fee is $18 per person, and $5 for high school students. The event is for ages 16 and older (794-0090).

The Extended Hands Cancer Ministry will have its annual Cancer Awareness Breakfast and Silent Auction 9-11:30 a.m. Sept. 17 at Silverstone Golf Club, 8600 Cupp Drive. Registration and the auction will begin at 8:30 a.m. The featured topic of the event will be “Triple Negative Breast Cancer.” Tickets are $40 (531-6191).

Reformation Lutheran Church, 580 E. St. Louis Ave., will host a “Brunch & Bid” event at 11 a.m. Sept. 18. After brunch, attendees may bid on gift items and dining certificates. Tickets are $5-$6 (732-2052).

The Jewish Community Center of Southern Nevada, 9001 Hillpointe Road, will celebrate its one-year anniversary at its new home in Summerlin 1-4 p.m. Sept. 25. The free event will feature entertainment, children’s activities, a preview of the JCCSN Book Festival, vendors, free ice cream and birthday cake, and more (794-0090).

MEETINGS

The Las Vegas Lay Dominicans will have their monthly meeting featuring prayer, formation activities and a Communion service, 10 a.m.-noon today at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Newman Community, 4765 Brussels St.

The Sathya Sai Baba Devotional Singing Group meets at 5 p.m. Sundays at 1128 Triumph Court (461-8655).

The Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Las Vegas, 3613 E. Lake Mead Blvd., will offer a free class on the principles and history of its liberal religious tradition 7-9 p.m. today (878-0443).

Singles groups

Single Adults Learning Together, or SALT Ministries of CornerStone Christian Fellowship, meets at 6 p.m. Saturdays at 5825 W. Eldora Ave. (871-5050).
