EVENTS

Unity Center in the Valley, 6375 S. Pecos Road, Suite 218, will host a benefit concert for Friends in the Desert featuring music by Red Rose & Thorn at 7 p.m. Friday. Friends in the Desert Foundation provides meals for Henderson’s homeless and disadvantaged. Freewill donations will be accepted (435-3289).

King David Memorial Chapel and Cemetery will sponsor Kever Avot v’lmahot memorial services in conjunction with the Board of Rabbis of Southern Nevada on Sept. 12. Rabbis and cantors from Southern Nevada synagogues will conduct the services at the following times and locations: 10:30 a.m. at Woodlawn Cemetery, 1500 Las Vegas Blvd. North; 1 p.m. at King David Memorial Chapel and Cemetery, 2697 E. Eldorado Lane; and 1 p.m. at Palm Mortuary and Memorial Park — Northwest, 6701 N. Jones Blvd. Attendees will receive stones to place on their loved ones’ graves and a free yahrzeit candle to take home. In the spirit of the High Holy Days and tzedakah, attendees are asked to bring a donation of canned or dry food items for the food pantry at the Jewish Family Service Agency of Las Vegas (464-8570).

Christ the King Roman Catholic Community, 4925 S. Torrey Pines Drive, will host an Independence Festival focusing on Mexico and Central American countries and featuring a variety of foods, games and activities, cultural performing artists and more, 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Sept. 18 and 8 a.m.-6 p.m. Sept. 19. Proceeds from the event go toward youth activities and outreach programs for the community (871-1904).

SERVICES

Greater Evergreen Missionary Baptist Church, 1915 Lexington St., and its pastor Dr. Welton T. Smith III, will celebrate the church’s 64th anniversary at 8 and 11 a.m. worship services on Sept. 12. The Rev. Henry K. Smith, associate minister, will speak at both services. A “Sacrificial Offering March” showcasing the various church ministries and leaders will take place during the 11 a.m. service. A fellowship with light refreshments will follow the service (647-3071).

Central Christian Church services on Sept. 11 and 12 will feature actor Jim Caviezel sharing how his life has changed since portraying Jesus Christ in the film “The Passion of the Christ.” Caviezel will speak at 4:30 and 6 p.m. Sept. 11 and 9, 10:20 and 11:45 a.m. Sept. 12 at the Henderson campus, 1001 New Beginnings Drive, Henderson. The Sept. 12 services will be shown via video at the church’s Summerlin campus at Faith Lutheran Junior-Senior High School, 2015 S. Hualapai Way, and Northeast campus, 1460 Tree Line Drive; and at 10:20 and 11:45 a.m. at the Southwest campus at Desert Oasis High School, 6600 W. MEETINGS

The Rev. Wayne Parks will speak at 7:45 p.m. Tuesdays through Fridays and noon Saturdays through Sept. 17 at the recently opened Las Vegas Revival Center, 3507 S. Maryland Parkway, Suite 3 (631-5027).

The Nevada State Court of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas is considering members for a potential new court. A meeting for Catholic women ages 18 and older will take place at 7 p.m. Sept. 16 at Holy Spirit Catholic Church, Room 103, 5959 S. Hualapai Way. For more information, call 646-1323 or 360-0361.

Stillpoint Center for Spiritual Development, 8072 W. Sahara Ave., will present Peace Dancers at 7 p.m. the second Friday of each month. The Dances of Universal Peace are multicultural circle dances that use sacred phrases, chants, music and movements. A $10 donation is suggested (243-4040).

The Rev. Dr. James R. Beebe, Episcopal priest and faculty member of the Frensdorff School of Christian Formation, will introduce his discipleship series “Disciples of Christ in Nevada” at 7 p.m. Sept. 14 and 15 at St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church, 4709 S. Wellspring Church of All Nations, 4870 Janell Drive, will offer the class “Prayer Development 101” beginning Sept. 20 at 7 p.m. The registration fee is $25 per school year and the tuition fee is $50 per each 10-week class (631-5027).

Singles groups

New Life Christian Center has a singles meeting at 7 p.m. the second Friday of the month at 1229 E. Carson Ave. (387-5433).

St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church sponsors singles groups for professionals 25 to 45 years old and a singles group for people 45 and older (228-8311, Ext. 7333 or 7334).
