Moapa Valley students place second in national contest
May 15, 2007 - 9:00 pm
Four students from Moapa Valley High School placed second in the management competition of the sixth annual National ProStart Student Invitational April 20-22 in Charlotte, N.C.
Senior Kate Jessop and juniors Jonathan Xie, Betty Sendlein and Kirk Bullock were led by 2006 ProStart Teacher of the Year Mary Bullock and mentored by chef Christopher Lindsay, sous chef for the main hotel kitchen at the MGM Grand.
More than 250 high school students took part in the competition, which judges teams on their culinary and management skills. The competition was presented by the National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation and its sponsor, Coca-Cola.
Teams were judged on their performance in the Knowledge Bowl, a “Jeopardy”-style game, and on a case study, in which teams were given 30 minutes to review an industry case study before making a presentation for the judges.
The Moapa Valley team, which advanced to nationals after winning the Nevada ProStart Student Invitational at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas on March 16, received $51,850 in scholarships, in addition to knife kits, cutting boards, and baking and pastry textbooks.
The management team from Bend High School in Oregon won first place.
