SLEEPING IN STYLE

When it comes to sleeping in style, the folks at Vaughan-Bassett Furniture Co. know a thing or two.

The 88-year-old company specializes in bedroom décor, said Doug Bassett, vice president of sales. In fact, 97 percent of the Galax, Va.-based firm’s business is from the sale of bedroom furniture.

Bassett believes the company’s success is due to the options it provides consumers. Not only can they choose from numerous design styles, they can select from several color palettes within each collection. And, most offer a choice of three beds: high posts, low posts or sleigh.

“It’s incredibly empowering for the consumer,” he said.

Additionally, because the majority of the furniture is manufactured in the U.S., buyers usually only have to wait 14 days at the most to receive their orders.

Hoping to introduce its offerings to more people on the West Coast, the company recently opened a showroom in Building B at the World Market Center downtown.

“We’re really excited about being in Las Vegas,” Bassett said.

Prior to the January home-furnishings market, Bassett said his company’s dealings had been primarily with more than 3,000 dealers on the East Coast. “We were not well-distributed along the Pacific and Mountain time zones.”

He believes that is changing. More than half of the people who visited the showroom in Las Vegas were new to the company, and they liked what they saw.

“We’re expecting big things,” he added.

Vaughan-Bassett offers both solid-wood furniture and pieces made with solid legs and posts with wood veneer tops. According to Bassett, the company is the largest manufacturer of wooden bedroom furniture in the United States.

Currently the most popular and best-selling collection is Cottage, available for both adults and youths. Offered in six finishes, the collection is classically inspired and features clean lines. It includes a panel or slat bed and varied pieces such as an armoire/entertainment center, chest, computer desk and hutch, nightstand and triple dresser.

Bassett said one of the appealing features of the collection is that it offers true twin- and full-size beds along with the option of under-bed storage.

Also available in both adult and youth categories is the Lifestyle collection. With a streamlined look and contemporary accents, the collection is offered in five finishes, including white and black. In all, there are 150 pieces in the collection. Consumers can choose from three bed styles: canopy frame, canopy poster or bookcase bed with storage. Other pieces include a computer desk and hutch, chest, dresser and landscape mirror.

The Uptown Traditional collection is a very traditionally designed group that is available in dark or light cherry and black with brushed nickel hardware. Pieces include a choice of three bed styles, chest, vanity chest, armoire/entertainment center and triple dresser.

Bassett said he is very proud of the company’s Beacon Hill collection, which is made of solid oak or maple. He said the price points are very appealing, with a bed in maple starting at $699 and an oak sleigh bed priced at $799.

A nice feature of the collection is the option of adding a felt-lined jewelry box below the arched mirror or selecting a shadow box mirror. It also offers a six-drawer chest-on-chest-on-chest, which looks like three chests stacked on top of each other.

As with all of the company’s armoires, Beacon Hill’s can be used to store clothes or house a television and its components.
