Central bud critical to palm’s survival

: In March of this year, I had a pindo palm planted. Initially, the plant did very well; however, now the fronds are all brown and brittle. I gently tugged on the center fronds and the entire center came out. The base was mushy and there were tiny worms as well. Does this mean my palm is history? Please help!

Rugs add so much to any room

Other than a great coat of paint, nothing else you can do to your space will signal a greater change than adding an area rug. I absolutely love them because — regardless of your style, color preferences or the space in question — the addition of an area rug will make that space more comfortable and a lot more interesting.

Giant pumpkin growers go to the extreme

Just like gardeners, the act of gardening can take on many forms. As you and I fret over important backyard challenges such as why our hydrangeas aren’t blooming or how come that tomato just won’t ripen fast enough, others are dealing with much bigger issues. Scattered across the country, there are a few thousand “extreme gardeners” who methodically plod through the art and science of competing to grow the world’s largest pumpkin each year.

Vinyl base molding rolls along easily

: In my kitchen I have a vinyl floor. Around the perimeter of the room I would like to install some vinyl base molding so that the entire thing is washable. Is this any different from installing wood molding?

Home office furniture needn’t be homely

The services of a cabinetmaker may be needed in order to furnish a home office that succeeds visually as well as functionally. A desk styled like those in a corporate office will probably meet all practical needs, but it may well look out of place in a residential setting.

Candy containers a treat for collectors

Among the holidays collectors love the most, Halloween ranks second only to Christmas. The older and rarer a Halloween collectible, the higher its price.

Modern designs

In the 1990s, Bonnie and Hugh Fogel were frustrated. They were trying to decorate and outfit their home and were having difficulty finding furniture and accessories that met their modern sensibilities. By 1998, they had a solution: open their own store.

Room’s function cues type of lighting

DEAR GAIL: We thought by adding can lights in our family room it would brighten up the room and be all we would need. Wrong. We have a vaulted ceiling that goes up to the second floor and just don’t know what to do. Before we go out and buy more lighting, we’d like to know a little more about what we should be looking for. Thanks. — Marsha S.

In narrow room, right décor can trick the eye

So what do we do with a room that is long and narrow? The first trick is to fool the eye by painting the short walls dark and the long walls light. The darkened walls will seem to come into the room a bit, making them appear closer and therefore making the room look a bit more in proper proportion.

Today’s home offices can fit just about anywhere in the home

I have seen so much interest and gotten so much mail about how to decorate or redecorate our homes to accommodate working from home that I’m talking about home offices today. But, I think you’ll be surprised. Home offices are not what they used to be. Today it’s all in the attitude.

Irrigation frequency, not amount, varies by season

: I finally got good advice on how to water my trees and bushes this year. I watered one hour twice a week for deep watering during the summer and they have flourished. Now that we have cooler temperatures, I have decreased it to once a week for one hour. Is this correct for now or should I change my watering schedule?
