Strong foundation best place to start tile countertop

: I’m going to replace my countertop with ceramic tile, so I have removed my old laminate one leaving nothing but the cabinets below. I have done some small floor tiling projects, but never a countertop. I’m going to reuse my drop-in sink and faucet, but how do I go about building the base that the tiles will sit on?

Pot-in-pot production protects plants

There has been some damage to trees in the valley due to snow accumulating on their branches and breaking limbs. Trees that I know of that were damaged include olive, pine, pepper, African sumac, mesquite, ash and Italian cypress. In some cases, the snow did not break limbs but bent them downwards out of their normal shape.

Simple ideas help beautify spaces

As another year comes to an end, I once again want to take this opportunity to thank you for reading Inside Spaces each week and for sharing your decorating issues with me. Enriching lives through our home environment is foreign to some, but not to me and not to you, my readers. I know how important it is to have just the right lamp, the perfect color in the floor tile, the most luxurious throw on the sofa and exactly how high to hang those pictures.

Get ORGANIZED

As joyous as the holidays were, now comes the difficult part … putting everything away. It’s not just the Christmas ornaments and menorahs, but the extra large thermal blanket that was a gift from mom and dad, the rolls of paper towels left over from holiday celebrations, and the three really large jars of cashew brittle, pistachios and red licorice that no one ate before or after Thanksgiving dinner — and don’t even mention the fruitcakes.

Mirrors can create magic, enchant spaces

The Christmas card arrived wrapped jewellike in brilliant gold foil paper, and my wife and I were thrilled to discover that the traditional holiday greeting was accompanied by an invitation to join our client for what promised to be an elaborate, over-the top dinner. We knew that for a fact because everything this client did was first class, always exhibiting graciousness and superb good taste. We were excited and couldn’t wait to see the decorations and taste all the goodies prepared by his personal chef.

Recycled Christmas trees are a gift for community

Christmas trees are one of the recognized traditions of the holiday season. They make our homes smell lovely, we can decorate them and they provide a beautiful focal point for gifts. But what happens after the holiday season? Don’t throw your Christmas trees out to the trash this holiday season. Try something new and help reduce what is going into our public landfills.

Make your Christmas tree a little ‘greener’

For the first 20-something years of my life, real Christmas trees were the only option I ever knew. And frankly, artificial trees were so depressingly plastic-looking back then, I’m glad it was never an issue in my house.

Use caution with sheet metal or you’ll do more than vent

: During a home inspection, the inspector discovered that my water heater needed a new vent connected to the ceiling. He said it is an easy and inexpensive repair. Just how easy and inexpensive is it?

It’s in the cards

At this time each year, we all have to answer that age old question: What do you do with the many holiday cards and mounds of wrapping paper strewn around the house? The easy answer is to toss everything in the garbage. A better answer is to recycle, starting with all the colorful Hanukkah, Christmas and Kwanzaa cards received from family, friends and your insurance agent.
