Right combination of colors makes a happy — happy looking — home

Men and women differ in many ways, as we know all too well. Viva la difference? Absolutely. One of the ways we differ is in our preference of color. For example, a study by Guilford and Smith in 1959 revealed that men were more tolerant toward achromatic (colorless) atmospheres than women. With that in mind, Guilford and Smith deduced that women might be more color-conscious.

Unique Horsemobile had Moxie

Moxie, the soft drink that was introduced as a medicine in a Massachusetts drugstore in 1876, used some very early automobiles in advertising campaigns.

WISHIN’ AND HOPIN’

It’s Father’s Day and being a parent is a colossal achievement. One of the greatest accomplishments of my life has been being the “Dad.”

Tour gets to the heart of green building

If there’s one thing Las Vegas is known for, it’s change. Although our green building awareness got off to a slow start compared to some other cities, we’ve managed to turn that around. Many are surprised to learn that the rate of green building is accelerating rapidly in Southern Nevada, now home to some of the largest green building projects in the world.

Flowers stunt garlic, onion’s growth

: Another gardener told me that I should never let garlic or onions flower or go to seed. He said to cut the flower stems off as soon as they appeared. Is he right?

Unmarked art glass often a bargain

Twentieth-century art glass is attracting adventurous buyers who search for relatively unknown European pieces. Because most of this glass is unmarked or marked with a handwritten name or a paper label, it requires study.

You be the Judge

Sometimes you really can judge a book by its cover — especially when it comes to your home’s décor.

Space in a room can be just an illusion

The general consensus, until recently, seemed to be that bigger is better. McMansions are the only way to go and the one who has the most toys at the end is the winner. But now, in light of the great paradigm shift that has occurred in our economy, many of us are re-evaluating our priorities and have come to realize that simpler can be better and that smaller isn’t such a bad thing after all. In fact, downsizing has become a very attractive way to go.

New roses at base could mean plant’s roots are showing

I will be conducting a class on growing peaches in Southern Nevada on June 17 from 2-4 p.m. and again from 7-9 p.m. The class is free of charge and is intended to encourage small-scale production of peaches, as well as backyard growing. I will be covering which peaches have done the best for us at the University of Nevada Cooperative Extension Master Gardener’s demonstration orchard, proper planting, watering and fertilizing, as well as pest control.

Store bath essentials out of sight

Over the years in this column we’ve seen bathrooms to fit every style, shape and budget. Today I want to focus on how we live with those bathrooms, regardless of style, size or number of folks using them.

Water takes measuring to new level

Q: We want to spruce up a few rooms in our house with chair rail and add cabinets on some of our walls. My husband is a perfectionist and wants everything lined up like a Marine drill team. My question is about making sure everything is perfectly level. I have thought about a laser level, but I doubt I would ever use it again. Any ideas?

Everything in its place

Who hasn’t had one of those days where you have been busy all day but don’t feel like you’ve accomplished anything. It could be because you spent half of your time looking for a key piece needed to complete a project.

Parade recognizes exceptional design

Following the largest-attended event in its seven-year history, the Las Vegas Parade of Homes recognized exceptional design during an awards ceremony earlier this week.

Princess-perfect room inspires imagination with room to grow

Seven-year-old Charlotte is a fantasy writer in the making. She has a wonderful imagination that has been fueled by mom Christine’s romantic stories of faraway places and dad Norbert’s many creations — including a castle downstairs where Charlotte and brother Adrian can play.

TUNED IN

There may be no correct answer when it comes to that the age-old question, “Which came first, the chicken or the egg?” But when it comes to designing furniture for the home entertainment area or home office, it’s almost always technology that sets the stage.
