Can Saturday really be Halloween? Wow, where did this year go? I know I say it every year, but weren’t we just turning on the air conditioning? The older I get, the quicker the holidays seem to come. Maybe it’s because after 30 years in Las Vegas I’ve become less tolerant for the heat and can’t wait to turn off the a/c.
“Food and Hunger: Eating in America” was the topic of a panel discussion presented by the Black Mountain Institute last week at University of Nevada, Las Vegas. The panel included celebrated chef and author Alice Waters, writer and organic farmer David Mas Masumoto and noted food scholar Raj Patel. The conversation was meaningful, thought-provoking and, at times, witty and humorous. The hall was overflowing and it was great to see so much interest in a topic that included organic produce, local production, carbon footprint, social equity, sustainability and recognizing the true value and economy of wholesome, fresh food.

With new test results showing one out of four homes in Nevada with elevated levels of radon, University of Nevada Cooperative Extension officials are urging all homeowners to have their homes tested for the cancer-causing gas. As of June 30, 43 homes in Clark County showed elevated levels of radon of the 559 tested.
Research shows that families may have as little as three minutes to escape a home fire. October is fire safety month and the national, nonprofit Home Safety Council is partnering with the National Fire Sprinkler Association to raise awareness of critical steps every family should take to prepare for and protect against home fires.

: I just saw an article about a community farm in Pleasant Grove, Utah, that shows someone applying mineral oil to the corn cobs “to help keep bugs from getting in.” Do you know what this is about? Is this really about insect control? Is it something that I should consider?
