Home and Garden

Décor au naturel

Just as a bear emerges from his cold winter home to a world renewed with nature’s bounty, today’s home furnishings and accessories are renewing souls along with our relationship with Mother Nature.

Swap holiday decorations for everyday accessories

Dear Readers: As we approach the holiday season and time for decorating our spaces, I would like to offer, what I hope to be, a helpful hint. Holiday decorations tend to hold special places in our hearts for specific reasons.

Cut hollow-core door with caution

: I am replacing an interior door that needs to be cut down. Either I bought the wrong size door or the opening for it is not a standard size. The door is hollow and I need to cut it down by about an inch in height and one-quarter inch in width. What is the best way to do this, and does it severely weaken the door?

Baby, it’s cold outside

Being we live in the Las Vegas Valley and it is in the middle of the desert, odds are these mild temperatures won’t last for too much longer and our winter nights will be cold, if not frigid.

Mixed-finish pieces excite the eye, room’s décor

Mornings are often a quiet time in the design industry with clients and designers usually meeting up for lunch followed by a round of browsing through various trend-setting showrooms.

THE LATEST
Clean, green future not hard to imagine

I was pleased by a recent report detailing the substantial rise in property values in certain neighborhoods that are now the most desirable in the Las Vegas Valley. It was not completely unexpected. Ever since the light rail system was completed back in 2015, the value of nearby homes and businesses really took off. Ridership is more than double the projections. Everyone now wonders why Las Vegans took so long to build one in the first place.

Scale can be difficult to control

University of Nevada Cooperative Extension is accepting applications for its spring master gardener series of classes that begin in February. Registration will take place Tuesday from 6-7 p.m. at the UNCE Lifelong Learning Center, 8050 Paradise Road. The spring semester will run Feb. 2 through April 29, with classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6-9 p.m. Persons interested in attending the registration session should contact Ann Edmunds, program coordinator, at edmundsa@unce.unr.edu or 257-5587.

No need to table the topic; options plentiful

DEAR GAIL: We bought a new sofa and love seat and want to purchase new tables. What size and shape should we look for? Plus, should all the tables match or can we mix them up and do something different? In the past we’ve always purchased a complete matching set. — Suzan

Las Vegas projects win inaugural GAVA honors

GAVA, Global AquaTekture Visionary Awards, recently announced the winners of its inaugural competition that recognized the innovative spirit and creativity of water-themed designs.

Adding phone jack can be easy or hard

: I wanted to add another telephone jack in my house, so I called the telephone company to set it up. The price they quoted was too much. I only want to install a jack on the opposite side of the wall from where there is already a working jack. Is this difficult?

HOLIDAY PICK-ME-UPS

Although stores have been filled with holiday decorations for weeks, for most of us the holidays don’t truly arrive until today. And with them come a gaggle of guests to your home.

Palms prefer water frequently

: We recently bought a foreclosed home. There are no dripping or sprinkler systems in place as the previous owner had a dog who chewed them up. I know that they did not receive water for a few months. The backyard has two huge tall palm trees along with a short but very lively palm. Although I know that there is a layer of palm fronds that needs to be trimmed, I noticed that the fronds are turning brown and I do not want to see them die. So, in the interim I have moved the river rock away from the base of the trees and have taken the water hose and watered the bases of them in the morning and the evening when the sun is not bearing directly on them. I am not sure how long to run the water and do not want to overwater them.
