Midcentury tribute

tanley Furniture Co. is calling its new Hudson Street collection vibrant and metropolitan with a self-assured elegance.

The new collection, which debuted earlier this year at the home-furnishings trade show in High Point, N.C., offers a casual touch of glamour while appealing to sophisticated lifestyle consumers with a heightened sense of style.

“The underlying appeal of Hudson Street rests with its simplicity and soft curves, grounded in mid-20th century design,” said Kelly Cain, vice president and product manager. “Midcentury styles are flourishing, because it is clean, cosmopolitan design with a historical reference.”

Simple, straightforward lines, softened by graceful ovals recall the sophistication of the 1930s, ’40s and ’50s. Curved fronts, gently splayed legs, beaded details and custom hardware highlight the pieces.

Offered in two finishes, the moderately scaled collection is designed for urban lifestyles and packed with function. The dark espresso and warm cocoa finishes accentuate the walnut veneers and maple solids.

Unexpected elements add freshness and flair, according to Cain. Chocolate shagreen adds texture, while distressed antique silver softens the modern lines. Dark emperador marble goes contemporary with a rubbed, honed finish, with upholstery warmed by a sandstone-colored fabric.

“Thoughtfully designed, Hudson Street is as vivacious as life in the city without the glitz,” Cain said. “It evokes a sense of recent history while simultaneously taking a fresh look toward the future.”

Bedroom pieces portray a midcentury state of mind and a brush with glamour. Beds include the Avenue upholstered bed, which has a tufted headboard with vertical welting and button accents; the Beekman bed with graduated horizontal slats and gently splayed legs; and the Harrison poster bed, which can be purchased as a traditional bed with a headboard and footboard, as a poster bed or as a poster bed with a canopy frame.

The 50s/50 oval mirror balances on a pedestal base and offers a sexy, glamorous look atop the curved-front Tribeca dresser. The tall, slender Houston armoire showcases walnut veneers and beaded details.

Other highlights include the long-legged Tribeca accessory chest, which has six drawers; the Urban chest, which has a curved front and beaded details on the drawers; and the nine-drawer dresser, which has a flat front, curved top and beaded top drawers.

In the dining room, the Riverside oval dining table features radial-matched cathedral walnut veneers. Other tables included the round dining table, which expands to 68 inches in diameter with perimeter leaves, and the rectangular dining table, which offers two 20-inch leaves and has parquet walnut veneers and a beaded apron.

Graduated slat-back arm and side chairs have a youthful, relaxed motif, while lower-height oval arm and side chairs provide a more formal look. An elegant upholstered back chair recalls classic midcentury design.

Rubbed, dark emperador marble tops the Greenwich sideboard, which has curved beveled-glass doors. The sleek, long-legged Charlton serving china has beaded drawer fronts and a functional pull-out shelf.
