Vegetables, roses focus of free seminars
Vegetables and flowers will be the focus of two free seminars offered this month by the University of Nevada Cooperative Extension.
Growing Vegetables Hydroponically in Greenhouses in the Hot Desert is scheduled from 7 to 9 p.m. Feb. 26. Deborah May of VIP Produce will lead the session.
Participants will learn the pluses and minuses of growing vegetables hydroponically, what it costs to get going and marketing responses to hydroponics. Free samples will be available to taste.
Up and Coming Roses Now and in the Future is scheduled from 7 to 9 p.m. Feb. 28, and is being co-sponsored by the South Valley Rose Society. The guest speaker is Christian Bedard, a rose hybridizer who has received acclaim for his new miniature rose release, Coffee Bean.
Participants will learn about new rose releases, what will grow in the desert Southwest and how roses are hybridized.
Both sessions will be offered at the Lifelong Learning Center, 8050 S. Maryland Parkway.

Program to replace air conditioners at no cost
The Nevada State Contractors Board and the Southern Nevada Air Conditioning Refrigeration Service Contractors Association have begun their third annual Mission Cool Off Program that will replace air-conditioning units free of charge for three households.
Recipients will be chosen based on their special needs.
The program is limited to no more than 100 applications, which must be received by Feb. 29. The program is not open to tenants, landlords, owners who do not reside at the residence or mobile home owners.
Applications are available at the contractors board’s Web site, www.nscb.state.nv.us or by calling Ranya Botros at 486-1165.
