Design students to compete at show

Interior design students from the International Academy of Design and Technology in Henderson will participate in the Las Vegas Home Improvement & Decorating Show’s “roomscape” competition at Cashman Center Friday through Sunday.

The competition encourages students to forge relationships with local vendors to supply products while teaching skills in sales, networking, project management, space planning and design installation, all essential components to the interior design field.

More than a dozen students, organized into four creative teams, have worked to decorate rooms for local celebrities including Sabra, a contestant from Fox’s show “So You Think You Can Dance?”; Cathy Colbert, dance soloist for the Nevada Ballet Theatre; Doug Kezinian, sports announcer for KTNV Channel 13; and Joe Hawk, sports editor for the Las Vegas Review-Journal.

Awards will be presented at 5:30 p.m. Friday.

The students’ designs will be available for viewing throughout the three-day show. Hours are noon-7 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m.-7 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Sunday.

The Las Vegas Home Improvement & Decorating Show features more than 500 booths featuring the latest in home improvement, decorating and landscape products and services. Admission is $6 for adults, $5 for senior citizens and free for children 18 and younger when accompanied by a paid adult. Military personnel will be admitted free on Friday with proper identification.

Cashman Center is located at 850 Las Vegas Blvd.
