Master gardener training to begin
The University of Nevada Cooperative Extension will hold two registration sessions for the upcoming Fall 2008 Master Gardener class. They are scheduled from 9-10 a.m. July 21 and Aug. 4 at the cooperative extension’s Lifelong Learning Center, 8050 Paradise Road.
The fall training class begins Sept. 5; classes will be held from 9 a.m. to noon on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.
During the registration sessions, details about the training program requirements, volunteer commitment and community projects will be discussed.
The master gardener program is open to all. The program’s focus is on volunteering and sharing gardening knowledge with the community. The program teaches correct desert gardening practices, including proper plant selection and care, disease and pest management and water-efficient gardening.
To become a master gardener, an individual must complete 70 hours of horticultural instruction and volunteer 50 hours on community projects each year.
Volunteer projects are ongoing at Acacia Park, the Nathan Adelson Hospice and the Las Vegas Springs Preserve. Additional projects include the Doolittle and Lieburn Senior Center community gardens, the Master Gardener Orchard and the Clark County Fair.
A fee is charged to cover the cost of books and other training materials. Applications with payment are accepted on a first-come basis. Class size is limited.

Free workshop to aid those seeking licenses
The Nevada State Contractors Board Business Assistance Program will offer a free workshop July 22 to help those interested in applying for a contractor’s license. The session is scheduled from 9-11 a.m. at the Henderson office, 2310 Corporate Circle, Suite 200.
Workshop participants will receive information to complete the application process quickly and accurately. In additional, applicants are given the opportunity to have their applications reviewed by staff before submitting them for approval. Information in locating source documents for the application is provided, as well as a checklist of state and local resources.
The contractors board encourages applicants to take advantage of the program. Many who have attended said it was very helpful in their application process.
The State of Nevada requires that all contractors be licensed. This includes plumbers, painters, landscapers, electricians, roofers and more.
