Cooperative Extension offers series about fall gardening

Since fall in Las Vegas is the perfect time to get your garden in shape, the master gardeners of Southern Nevada will present their annual fall community lecture series, Becoming a Desert Gardener.

The free series will be held from 7-8 p.m. each Wednesday in October at the University of Nevada Cooperative Extension Lifelong Learning Center, 8050 Paradise Road.

During the month, participants will learn how to plant now for vegetables this fall and winter on Oct. 7; garden with physical limitations on Oct. 14; water for desert plants — how much, how often, how to tell — on Oct. 17; and what can grow in the desert on Oct. 28.

Interested people may register for any or all of the four classes.

Reservations are requested and can be made by calling the home gardening help line at 257-5555.

Landscape professionals to gather for annual conference

The premier turf and landscape event for landscape professionals in the Southwest, Desert Green, will be held Oct. 22-23 at Sam’s Town.

Green Industry Crossroads: Sharpening the Blade features two days of four concurrent seminar tracks, including one on pest management with pesticide continuing education units as well as the Nevada Certified Applicators Exam offered Oct. 23. Tracks covering landscape architecture, arboriculture, irrigation and water conservation and golf and sports turf management will be offered.

The conference is sponsored by University of Nevada Cooperative Extension, along with Southwest Trees & Turf, Southern Nevada Golf Course Superintendents Association, Southern Nevada Arborist Group, Nevada Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects, Southern Nevada Water Authority, Nevada Landscape Association and Nevada Shade Tree Council.
