The National Interior Design Society will make its Nevada debut Friday, launching its 28th chapter during an event at the Las Vegas Design Center.

The national society has more than 3,000 members .

Friday’s event is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. in room 176 of Building C at the design center, 495 S. Grand Central Parkway .

Expert: Give air conditioner checkup before summer

One of the best ways to stay cool and keep sky-high power bills in check is to schedule a preventative maintenance checkup for your air conditioner before the summer heats up.

A certified HVAC technician will perform a thorough examination of your unit, cleaning the condenser coil, measuring coolant levels, checking safety controls, fans and belts, clean control compartment and check for air leakage.

According to statistics compiled by NV Energy, as many as 70 percent of air-conditioning units in Las Vegas are not operating as efficiently as they could be and one of the main causes is refrigerant levels are either too high or too low. Also, not cleaning the condenser coil can shorten the life of a unit and result in costly repairs.

Vern Rettig, owner of Windy City Air Conditioning and Heating in Las Vegas, recommends that when selecting a technician be sure he is licensed with the Nevada State Contractors Board and bonded, and will guarantee all work in writing for a one-year period if repairs are necessary.

For more information, contact Windy City at 932-7284.

Gaining control over this annual weed is not easy to do

To make sure it doesn’t return you have to interrupt the seed-to-flowering-plant cycle at least for a couple of years and fill the voids with something competitive.

Why did my bird of paradise plants quit blooming?

They were in bloom when we planted them five or six years ago, and they bloomed the following year as well. But they have not bloomed again.
