Annual Float Like a Duck to teach kids water safety

The seventh annual Float Like a Duck water safety event, which is designed to teach children water safety rules, will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. May 22 at the Bill & Lillie Heinrich YMCA water sports park, 4141 Meadows Lane.

The event is free and open to the public; however, all children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

The award-winning, community awareness campaign educates the public on the importance of safety while celebrating the joys of water sports.

“Kids have a natural tendency to play with and around water. Floating is one of the basic steps in learning how to swim and to becoming water safe,” said an event spokesperson.

Activities during the event include float stations; hands-on safety training with life vests, ring buoy toss and how to call 911; parent/child swim class demonstration for children between the ages of 6 months and 2 years (parents should plan on being in the water with their children ; and the Duckie song station.

Duckie is the event’s mascot.

Additionally, all event attendees will receive a coupon for 25 percent off swim lessons, and there will be a free swim lesson and summer membership raffle each hour.

All participants should bring a swim suit.

Float Like a Duck was created by Paragon Pools to stress the importance of being safe around water and instill water-safety rules.

Additional event sponsors and participants are Southern Nevada Health District, Las Vegas Fire and Rescue, KVVU Fox 5, Metropolitan Police Department, ABC KTNV 13, the Association of Pool and Spa Professionals, Brand Ltd. and Solar Printing and Graphics.

They were in bloom when we planted them five or six years ago, and they bloomed the following year as well. But they have not bloomed again.
