Ahead of the Curve
Changes in the way we view and use home offices are just around the corner, and aspenhome is poised to stay ahead of the curve with its well-rounded new Adagio collection.
Introduced at the summer home-furnishings trade show at World Market Center Las Vegas, Adagio offers a contemporary look characterized by oval shapes that are mimicked in crisp convex and concave curves found throughout the collection of home office, home entertainment and occasional pieces.
"Desks were originally designed to be used for sitting at while we were reading or writing but the computer era has changed all of that," said Ken Levi, home office and home entertainment designer. "Now we need desks to accommodate laptops and computers with all of their accessories while being comfortable for us to use. Adagio is ergonomically designed to do just that."
A 72-inch oval laptop desk, one of the collection’s main pieces, keeps comfort in the forefront with features such as hidden pullout laptop and mouse pad shelves at a lower height and built-in adjustable footrest.
And, as with nearly all aspenhome’s furniture, the desk offers a variety of "ah" features that makes using it more convenient, such as a pull-out signing shelf, USB power hub, hidden cord management and file drawer that can convert to a printer drawer.
Flexibility also is a key feature of the collection. The home office group includes several modular pieces that can be mixed as needed to accommodate one’s needs.
Desk options include a 66-inch oval executive desk available with one- or two-drawer pedestals and a partner’s desk that can be positioned in different angles from a modular wall. A computer desk also is offered.
The wall itself offers multiple configurations with its curved front doors, glass or open-top hutches that can be stacked in any combination on open or double-door bases and 34-inch lateral files that can be used alone or lined up side by side credenza style.
"The modular pieces click together to fit your work space," said Cathy Lloyd, a spokesperson for the Phoenix-based manufacturer.
In the home entertainment arena, a curved-front media console takes center stage. The console has a motorized lift system for a plasma or flat-screen television that can be hidden within the base when not in use. Audio and video components can be stored in the center portion or in optional side cabinets. It is available in 45-inch or 56-inch versions, as well as a 76-inch Max.
Additional features include built-in speakers set up for surround sound, hidden storage drawer at the bottom and a gamer drawer.
To complement the media centers, occasional tables in a variety of sizes and offering different storage features are available. These include the yin-yang cocktail, nesting, oval cocktail, martini, chair side, end and sofa tables. All have the same unique curves and/or oval shape and most are on casters to enhance their versatility.
Lloyd said the yin-yang table is ideal for sectionals because the two pieces can be used individually and they have the same curved shape as the sofas.
All of the pieces in the collection have a light-finish, American black walnut diagonal veneer pattern, faux leather-wrapped chrome hardware and float on chrome bases.
The collection was given a Pinnacle Award for the best design in the home entertainment division by the American Society of Furniture Designers during its annual contest at the fall furniture trade show in High Point, N.C. Judges were impressed by the collection’s sculptural quality, richness of materials and thoughtful modern lines.
The collection is expected to be available at retail stores shortly after the start of the new year.
