St. Rose Dominican Hospitals–Siena Campus Named One of Best Hospitals in America

A Consumers’ Checkbook survey, as reported in the May/June 2009 issue of AARP The Magazine, just named St. Rose Dominican Hospitals–Siena Campus one of the best hospitals in America.

Consumers’ Checkbook, a nonprofit watchdog group, surveyed doctors from across the country asking them whether and where they recommend patients seek care in their own and other communities for difficult cases including complicated heart conditions, cancer and other unusual ailments. From 140,000 hospital ratings, the organization published a listing of the 125 best hospitals in the nation’s 53 largest population centers. St. Rose Dominican Hospitals–Siena Campus was the top-rated of only two hospitals selected in Nevada. In 17 states, no facilities were selected for the top 125.

“We so often hear about Nevada trailing the rest of the country in health care quality. This study highlights St. Rose’s dedication to excellence, both in our clinical care and our patient and physician satisfaction. We are elated to be named one of the country’s best hospitals, among such internationally acclaimed facilities like John Hopkins and UCLA Medical Center.  It’s especially gratifying to know that in addition to our clinical results, doctor and patient ratings were also taken into consideration in the ranking,” said Rod Davis, president/CEO of St. Rose Dominican Hospitals.

Consumers’ Checkbook sifted through 30 million hospital records to calculate risk-adjusted death rates and adverse-outcome rates, sent out more than 280,000 questionnaires to physicians, checked ratings of  hospitals by surveyed consumers, checked which hospitals were providing recommended tests and procedures for patients with specified medical problems, and more to compile the ratings. The final list of 125 top hospitals was selected from 1,467 acute-care hospitals in and around the nation’s major metropolitan areas.
