Review-Journal begins series of Alzheimer’s stories

Alzheimer’s disease is a rising storm, threatening to not only steal the golden years from millions of Americans, but also cripple their loved ones emotionally and financially. And as the large baby boom generation ages, the disease could paralyze the health care system and overburden the nation’s economy.

In a series of stories beginning Sunday, the Las Vegas Review-Journal introduces you to some of the Southern Nevadans who live with Alzheimer’s disease —- and to their families, who often provide exhaustive round-the-clock care.

We ask policy makers and leading researchers, doctors, and social workers, including those at the Cleveland Clinic Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health in Las Vegas, for their views and predictions. How close is a cure? Is there a way to prevent Alzheimer’s disease? Should you get tested for it? What treatments are available? Is there a way to mitigate the financial burdens it causes ? How is Nevada preparing?
