ADAPTIVE RECREATION PROGRAM RECEIVES $5,000 GRANT

The city of Las Vegas Adaptive Recreation Program has been awarded a $5,000 grant from the National Recreation and Park Association’s 2012 Parks: Return and Restore program. The city’s Adaptive Recreation Program was selected to receive the funding to support local community programs and opportunities for disabled veterans and members of the military.

The city’s Adaptive Recreation Program, which is part of the Parks, Recreation and Neighborhood Services Department, levels the playing field for people with disabilities, giving them the opportunity to participate in recreational activities. Through activity modifications and special equipment, disabled athletes are able to play alongside their non-disabled peers.

As a result of this grant, no-cost enrollment for injured military personnel in adaptive activities will be available while grant funds last. The programs include a wide array of activities that offer a fun way to stay fit, including recreation and outdoor/adventure experiences, fishing clinics, one-on-one swim lessons, aquatic therapy and a seasonal golf program. Wheelchair Sports provides opportunities in sports training and competitions throughout Southern Nevada in basketball, tennis, football, power soccer, quad rugby and over-the-line.

CALVARY CHAPEL 5K RUN PLANNED

Calvary Chapel Spring Valley’s Couch to 5K program is set for Saturday with the Running With the Lions 5K. The event, which serves as the finale for a churchwide fitness program, is also a fundraiser for Calvary Chapel Christian School.

For many, the Running With the Lions 5K will be their first experience running in an official race.

The run will begin and end at the Clavary Chapel Christian School athletic field, 7175 W. Oquendo Road, and medals will be awarded to best overall finishers, as well as the first three winners in age and gender categories. Runners and walkers of all levels and ages are invited to participate in either the 5K or untimed one-mile fun walk. Proceeds from the run will benefit the athletic and academic programs of Calvary Chapel Christian School, a nondenominational Christian church.

Following the race, an expo and vendor fair featuring live music, children’s activities, smoothies from Tropical Smoothie, haircuts and neck massages from Sport Clips, food trucks and raffle prizes are planned. The event is open to the public and registration is available at active.com starting at $25 per member of a family or team or $35 for individuals.
