In the summer of 1984, Julie Gibbs, an active, healthy young woman, went to the doctor with joint pain.
It’s a mysterious disease that often goes undiagnosed for years. Once a patient is diagnosed, they’ve often never heard of the disease, and neither have their family and friends. Yet lupus is a debilitating disease with many masks.
When Nancy B.’s only child began acting out on the playground of his elementary school, she realized his behavior was different from the other kids. His teachers noticed as well. Her 6-year-old son was inattentive and disturbed other children at work in the classroom, she said.
