HEALTH Q&A: Llifting weights

Q: I don’t want to look like a body builder. Do women need to lift weights?

A: Attention all women train like a man to look like a lean, hard-bodied woman! Men have higher levels of testosterone, which increases muscle and bone mass. Genetically, women cannot bulk up from lifting weights. High-intensity weight training burns calories and contributes to a greater reduction in overall body fat than aerobic activities alone. The aftereffect boosts the metabolism for increased results. Sculpting the body gives an ascetically pleasing physique that is highly desirable. As women build strong lean muscles, bones become stronger, improving health.

Don’t let the free-weight room at the gym intimidate you. They are just dumbbells! Start with basic exercises. Weight train three to four days per week, rotating muscle groups, and incorporate core and abdominal work daily. If you are not sure what to do, ask. Gyms are staffed with professionals to help you reach your goals.

So get out there and lift, ladies!
