ANGEL QUILT TO MAKE STOP IN LAS VEGAS

Two children from Nevada, including one from Las Vegas, will be among the dozens of angels of pediatric cancer featured on The National Angel Quilt in mid-July, when the quilt’s national tour makes a stop in Las Vegas.

Leah Marie Goldberg of Las Vegas is among the children currently featured on the National Angel Quilt for Childhood Cancer, which honors children across the United States who have lost their lives to pediatric cancer. The quilt is a traveling exhibit created by the Make Some Noise: Cure Kids Cancer Foundation, a pediatric research foundation, started by a NJ by with cancer in 2009. Goldberg was diagnosed with cancer in her senior year at Northwest Career and Technical Academy in 2012, when she was diagnosed with a deadly brain tumor called gioblastoma multiforme.

The National Angel Quilt is set to be on display in Las Vegas July 17-19 on the lower level near Sears Court at Meadows Mall.

WESTCARE TO HOLD DONATION DRIVE

WestCare Nevada has teamed up with community partners Crazy Pita and Nevada Title Company for a Christmas in July Drive, set to benefit the women and children at the nonprofit’s Women and Children’s Campus. The drive runs through July 31. Residents are asked to donate new and unwrapped baby items, including toys, blankets and clothing, as well as women’s clothing and new toiletries, at donation boxes inside any three of the valley’s Crazy Pita restaurants or at a Nevada Title Company office branch location. NEVADA CHILDHOOD CANCER FOUNDATION CAMP PLANNED

The Nevada Childhood Cancer Foundation is set to hold its 19th annual Camp Cartwheel Summer Camp for critically ill children and their siblings ages 5 to 17 through July 18 and July 22-25 at the Torino Ranch at the base of Mount Charleston.

The medically supervised, outdoor and overnight camp experience is for children diagnosed with cancer or other life-threatening illnesses. The free camp includes swimming, scuba diving, arts and crafts, canoeing and outdoor games. The Nevada Childhood Cancer Foundation’s staff and volunteers provide more than 200 campers the chance to form positive peer relationships, develop greater independence and self-esteem and have the opportunity to feel like a healthy child.

WOUND HEALING SEMINAR PLANNED

A free seminar called My Wound Won’t Heal — What Can I Do? is planned from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. July 28 at the Spring Valley Hospital conference center, 5400 S. Rainbow Blvd.

A non-healing wound can be a serious matter, especially if you have another medical condition, such as diabetes. This talk on advanced wound therapy treatment will cover options available through the Advanced Outpatient Wound Care and Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy center at Spring Valley Hospital.

DIABETES PREVENTION PROGRAM LAUNCHED ONLINE

The Southern Nevada Health District recently launched its newest online program, the Road to Diabetes Prevention, a free six-session program to reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes. The program is self-paced and includes optional activities and available resources in the community. NV ENERGY FOUNDATION AND BRAIN HEALTH CENTER TEAM UP

In support of enhancing medical education in Southern Nevada and beyond, the NV Energy Foundation and Cleveland Clinic Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health have partnered to create the NV Energy Chair for Brain Health Education. A five-year, $1.25 million grant from the NV Energy Foundation will fund the chair and help the clinic to advance its efforts to improve the quality of education for Nevada’s current and future health care professionals.

A core focus of the NV Energy Foundation Chair for Brain Health Education will be working hand-in-hand with the new UNLV School of Medicine where neuroscience is one of five areas emphasized and for which the center will be the principal venue for neuroscience training.

FIBROMYALGIA GROUP MEETS SECOND, THIRD THURSDAYS

The Fibromyalgia Friends Support Group of Southern Nevada is scheduled to meet during lunch and evening sessions the second and third Thursday of the month, respectively. FAMILIES ASKED TO TAKE SUNDAY DINNER PLEDGE TO SUPPORT SENIORS

Bonnie Reppert, owner of the Home Instead Senior Care office serving Las Vegas, Henderson and Boulder City, is asking families to take the Sunday Dinner Pledge and commit to scheduling regular meals with senior loved ones. For every pledge made, the Home Instead Senior Care Foundation will donate $1 to Meals on Wheels (up to $20,000) to help ensure that all seniors have access to healthy, nutritious meals.

Also included in the Sunday Dinner Pledge program is a year’s worth of healthy, easy-to-make recipes and shopping guides to help make family meals a positive experience for all generations.

HEALTH GROUP LOOKING FOR RESIDENTS’ INPUT

HealthInsight, a private nonprofit organization working to improve health care in Nevada hospitals, doctor’s offices and nursing homes, needs the public’s input to improve the health care experience.

The group is creating a Patient and Family Advisory Council to better understand the health care system from the patient’s viewpoint. Patients, families and caregivers participating in the council will share their personal stories and health care experiences.

A new Stroller Strides Fit4Mom class is planned from 4 to 5 p.m. Wednesdays on the campus of Summerlin Hospital Medical Center, 653 N. Town Center Drive.

Stroller Strides is a total fitness program that moms do with their babies. Activities include power walking/jogging and intervals of strength and body toning exercise using exercise tubing, a stroller and the environment. The class is taught by certified fitness instructors with specialty training in the pre- and postnatal woman. Instructors weave songs and activities into the routine designed to engage and entertain the babies.
