Boxes for unwanted prescriptions set up in Henderson

Residents now can discard unwanted or expired prescriptions in drop boxes at five Henderson Police Department locations.

The drop boxes will be secured and emptied regularly, giving people a legal and anonymous way to safely dispose of unused medications, Henderson police said.

The effort helps keep drugs from those who might abuse them and encourages people not to flush pills, which puts the medicines in the water system, police said.

“We encourage all residents to look through their medicine cabinets and join us to safely dispose of any old or unneeded prescription medications,” Henderson Police Chief Jutta Chambers said in a statement. “I know that this effort has the potential to prevent a tragedy.”

Pills should be placed in some sort of container or bag before being dropped in the box. Do not discard needles, syringes, liquids or powders.

The bright yellow boxes are in the lobbies of the following locations:

■ Henderson police Main Station, 223 Lead St., open daily 7:30 a.m. to
5 p.m.

■ Henderson police West Substation, 300 S. Green Valley Parkway, open daily 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

■ North Community Henderson Police Station, 225 E. Sunset Road, open daily 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
