Spring on the Fashion Trends
May 11, 2007 - 9:00 pm
What the fashion prognosticators think will sell and what you’re actually purchasing can land miles apart. We asked some Las Vegas boutique owners and department store fashion directors about the trends flying off their shelves to get a sense of what sells.
While you’re loading up on ballet flats or mini-dresses, keep in mind these scintillating trends that send shoppers on spending sprees.

INTERMIX
Over at Intermix, full speaks volumes. "The key trend right now that we are seeing is a lot of volume," said Sari Sloane, vice president of fashion merchandising for Intermix, citing puffy sleeves and bubble skirts as good examples. "Adding pieces with volume is an easy way to update your look for spring," she added. As for dresses, they also take on flyaway proportions. "The volume on dresses can either be found in certain details (like puffed sleeves) or in the proportion of the entire dress."
Hot Labels
Hottest labels include Thread Social, Miss Davenporte, Diane von Furstenberg and Chloe accessories.
Key Buys
Metallic accessories are really big right now. They are an easy way to update some more classic pieces, everything from metallic handbags, to shoes, belts, and of course, jewelry. Customers have really been reacting to higher waisted, wide-leg jeans. They are such an obvious departure from the low-rise, skinny skinny jeans of the last few seasons, and the customers are really responding to them. Cropped jackets have also been a huge hit. They are a great way to make proportions modern.
Big Color
Metallics and bright pops of color, yellow and green especially.
Gotta Have It
Must-have items are Chloe handbags, Brian Atwood shoes, J Brand wide-leg, high-rise jeans, Geren Ford silk bubble sleeve dress, Privee ankle pants and Theory stretch short shorts.
New, New, New
Crispin and Basilio, Valentine, Wayf, Alice Ritter, Alisha Levine, Yigal Azrouël and Bensoni.
MACY’S
At Macy’s, balance and proportion drive the trends. "In our contemporary zone, we are still seeing a lot of play on balance and proportion; tops in trapeze shapes paired over slim fit denim or city shorts," said Tifani Wilt, Macy’s women’s fashion director. "We are also seeing this trend happening with higher waist, wide-leg trousers paired with slim fitting knits or jackets."
Give Me a Label
Macy’s still believes in the denim business and has the newest silhouettes from 7 for all Mankind, Paige, Citizens for Humanity, Joe’s Jean and more. The store also offers great items from the hottest designers out of L.A., including Megan, Hannah Jo and Sumner.

WYNN LAS VEGAS
It’s definitely the season of the dress at the Wynn Las Vegas, which has stores such as Outfit and Mojito’s Resortwear. "Dresses are still the hottest body anywhere," said Todd Hanshaw, buyer for the Wynn. "People are still looking for a little twist on an old standby and the little black dress is back, back, back. The Givenchy little black dresses with cut outs and draping have been well accepted by our customers."
Gimme a Label
Alexander McQueen, Narciso Rodriguez and Zac Posen continue to be mainstays for customers at Wynn Las Vegas, but some of the newer people that are doing well are Richard Chai and the popular shirtings from Richard Nicoll are crowd pleasers.
Selling Out
The shirts from Richard Nicoll are a strong item for the Wynn Las Vegas at the moment as well as the fabulous dresses from Givenchy.
Material Goods
As we move to the warmer weather, cottons and lighter jerseys are really in demand, both of these fabrics lent themselves to wonderful drapings and pleatings and customers really appreciate the work that goes into these garments.
Color Cards
With the heat fast approaching the brighter colors have really started to come back into play with prints taking a very important role in all merchandise categories from designer to contemporary to swim. The Diane von Furstenberg vintage prints are bold, bright and a touch wild and have been a tremendous success. In the designer world the color play of Matthew Williamson has really hit its stride as well. The purples that we began to see in spring, and will take on a more important role for fall, are doing very well, giving strong cadence to the colors the Wynn believed in going forward.

Selling Now
We are looking forward to carrying two new lines for fall — Sophia Kokosalaki, who is taking Europe by storm and she will be exclusive to us for fall and also a smaller designer that we found in Paris called Gustavo Lins, an architect by training. He makes all his clothes directly on a form and nothing is even cut on a flat surface. It is just amazing; also exclusive to us.
