Shopping the Trends
November 16, 2007 - 10:00 pm
Experts and critics can forecast trends all they want, but the real proof is in your shopping bag. Did you take all those suggestions the fashion magazines threw at you in their biggest issues ever? Or, did you go your own route and prove the predictions wrong? Here’s a look at a few of the fashion pieces your favorite stores can’t seem to hold onto. Some prove those bible-thick glossies know their stuff (wide-leg jeans and metallics), while others (Ron Herman shoppers shun the grays) throw a curve ball onto the retail scene, keeping things interesting.
Todd Hanshaw, divisional merchandise manager for Wynn Las Vegas
• What is the key item shoppers are coming in for? Wide-leg jeans are definitely finding the customer this season with boots as a total category doing very well, especially the higher heels and sexier versions. Dresses are still a big part of our day-to-day business with an emphasis on color — specifically, jewel tones in the sapphire, purple and emerald green.
• What’s the hot seller now? Issa of London wrap dress is the new hot item that cannot be kept in the store. We have had a 90 percent sell through in a matter of two weeks. In the designer world, cool and comfortable: a Yigal Azröuel leather trim jersey dress has been re-ordered three times so far. VBH handbags have continued to be a great seller for us as well.
• What’s new at Outfit? We have already received holiday from Temperley and we are expecting the arrival of Rolland Mouret this week. It has been a year without him and we are looking forward to bringing him back to Las Vegas.
Sari Sloane, vice president of fashion merchandising at Intermix
• What is the key item shoppers are coming in for? J Brand jeans in all styles are selling really well. They have everything from skinny jeans to tuck into boots to higher-waisted flare legs in very wearable washes. Also flat boots from Frye.
• Which colors are really catching shoppers’ attention? Rich jewel tones are big for this season in both accessories and clothing.
• What’s the hottest seller right now? The Zagliani python bag has been an amazing seller. The leather is treated with Botox, so it is really soft and unique, and the metallic color is very versatile
• What’s new at Intermix? Graham & Spencer sequin mini-dress.
Craig Dickson, special events & public relations at Saks Fifth Avenue
• What is the key item shoppers are coming in for? Shine seems to be the key word around here. If it shines or sparkles, it’s hot.
• Which colors are really catching shoppers’ attention? Christian Louboutin Very Prive platform peep toes in all colors: black, brown, blue or tan.
• What’s the hottest seller right now? Christian Louboutin Metallica ankle bootie.
• What’s new at Saks Fifth Avenue? Juicy Couture has small leather goods, phone cases, wallets, doggie carriers and accessories.
Lisa Sandberg, H&M director of communications
• What is the key item shoppers are coming in for? Metallic dresses from $14.90 and tuxedo blazers from $24.90.
• Which colors are really catching shoppers’ attention? Grays and rust colors and “pops” in tights: purple and magenta.
• What’s the hottest seller right now? Baby doll dresses, oversized sweaters and tunics.
• What’s new at H&M? We have a completely different floor with shipments every day. Beginning Nov. 16 through Dec. 24, we’ll have a gift of the week that will be on special.
Aimee Yang, store manager of Ron Herman
• What is the key item shoppers are coming in for? Kasil and J Brand trouser jeans; sexy, going out tops from Sky; J Brand and Raven Denim wide-leg jeans; and Cindy Lee and 12th St. by Cynthia Vincent trapeze dresses.
• Which colors are really catching shoppers’ attention? Purples and pinks in all shades have had major hanger appeal to our customers. Everyone still wants to be in pretty, vibrant colors and not in drabby gray or browns right now.
• What’s the hottest seller right now? Jet, Free City, Orion Sky, Vanessa Bruno, Thread Social, Dream Society and Mike & Chris leather — we can’t keep it in the store!
• What’s new at Ron Herman? Marc by Marc Jacobs, Meteo (fur line), Graham & Spencer, Monique Leshman, 3.1 Phillip Lim and Yigal Azröuel.
