PICKS OF THE LITTER

Editor’s Note: Fashion Faves is one in a series of articles written in collaboration by the image staff. Fashion reporter Xazmin Garza and image editor Susan Stapleton take a look at the fashions on the runway and offer their opinions.

The fall fashion trends hit the stores full force, so now you can don those ladylike looks, snuggly sweaters, menswear-inspired trousers and embellished garments the designers sent down the runways. We take a look at some of our favorite collections this fall. Our comments just might make you take a look at a designer you hadn’t considered in the past.

STAPLETON’S PICKS

Marc Jacobs: What’s not to like about Marc Jacobs? The man is always two years ahead of the times. This season, he said goodbye to layers and frills and hello to lean, ladylike looks with slim pants, shift dresses and those hats that I’m dying to wear. While his looks may be X-ray thin this season, he still offered up frothy sequined pieces, origami-inspired bows and ladylike gloves that helped you remember that it’s the little touches that make an outfit go a long way.

Emilio Pucci: Matthew Williamson’s collection is so wearable. How I would love to show up in this metallic number for a night at Mon Ami Gabi. And he was one of the few designers to brave the world of color with a fall collection.

Zac Posen: I have loved watching Posen grow as a designer. His new collection with its glam dresses that run the gamut from elongated to pencil-thin captured the elegant look for the season. Watch for his creations on the Oscars red carpet.

Proenza Schouler: Again, Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez prove they’re more than a one-trick pony. They put together a chic collection for Target and show that their designs still rule the red carpet. Wide-legged trousers paired with hooded sweatshirts, jewel-toned dresses for the red carpet, and this ’20s-inspired dress with a zig-zag pleat. There’s something for everyone in this collection.

Burberry Prorsum: I just love it when a designer can change his look but keep his identity season after season. Designer Christopher Bailey used the Burberry logo — a medieval knight on a charger — as inspiration for the tough girl collection he sent down the runway. Full-metal trenches, patent leather thigh high boots and a new take on the line’s mainstay, the trench. Divine.

GARZA’S PICKS

Moschino: I adore this collection because it perfectly fits the lady who shows up to tea parties with a flask in her baguette. The round collars, bloated sleeves and abbreviated gloves bring to mind extended pinkie-sipping. But, the slim trousers, gold lamé and reflector aviators provide the perfect "spike."

Missoni: You’d think all the zig zag — Missoni’s signature pattern — could do is zig and zag but since taking over the reigns from her father, Angela Missoni has proven otherwise. Aside from taking knits into cocktail hour, the designer manages to reinvent classics, such as the part corset, part wide belt she sent down the runways for fall. Her lines are like a PB&J sandwich washed down with Dom Perginon: comfort and luxury never tasted so good together.

Christian Dior: If John Galliano is afraid of anything, it isn’t color. His fall collections looked as if a package of mouth-watering Starburst spilled onto the runway. And, who knew Mrs. Peacock hats could exude such sex appeal? Between the hats and the fur details that recall best in show poodles, this collection is one loud slap short of a full-fledged drama.

Dolce & Gabbana: The "Jetsons"-like belt the two Italian stallions whipped up for fall had me at hello. The width defines the waist in such an inviting manner but the shiny metal has a "back off" tone to it. The rest of the metallic and tulle-drenched collection follows suit. You don’t know whether to kiss the Dolce woman or to hide your young from her and, for some reason, I really like that.

Roberto Cavalli: Who combines disco gold with rodeo brown and ends up with high glam? Cavalli could make a shag rug seductive.
