Couple of Fashion Plates

The recent British invasion of David and Victoria Beckham has every American fashion outlet drooling over their fresh style. There’s no denying the two recent W cover models possess an extraordinary sense of fashion.

But before Becks and Posh graced us with their fashion plate-worthy presence, other couples had already claimed their ground in dapper duo territory. Take a look at our top five fashionable couples.

1. ANGELINA JOLIE & BRAD PITT

Pitt could have easily made this list with his last two significant others as well. Since parting ways with Juliette Lewis in the early ’90s he’s managed to consistently make up half of a very fashion-forward couple, whether he was with Gwyneth Paltrow or married to Jennifer Aniston. Jolie, on the other hand, hasn’t been so fortunate. Who can forget her dingy blue T-shirt and black leather pants on the red carpet with Billy Bob Thornton? With Pitt, however, she has donned nothing but ladylike elegance, be it courtesy of St. John at the Golden Globe Awards or wearing a $26 vintage dress like she donned to the premiere of "A Mighty Heart." The couple is a match made in fashion heaven.

2. BEYONCÉ KNOWLES & JAY-Z

They’re often referred to as hip-hop royalty and these two love to dress the part. Since hooking up with the designer-conscious Knowles, Jay-Z’s style has gone from jerseys and sagging jeans to bespoke suits and ascots. Even when the two lounge on the beaches of St. Tropez every summer, they look as though they’re posing for a resortwear ad. Not even royalty can make fashion look this good.

3. GWEN STEFANI & GAVIN ROSSDALE

He’s got that James Dean look going on and she’s got, well, everything right about fashion going on. L.A.M.B. designer Stefani has gone from skater chick to punk princess to glamour girl and she’s touched all the bases in between. Former Bush frontman Rossdale has maintained his bad boy denim-and-leather look by her side and, oddly enough, offered the perfect balance in doing so.

4. SARAH JESSICA PARKER & MATTHEW BRODERICK

Individually they each earn a deserving nod but, arm in superbly styled arm they steal the show completely. Parker’s ability to reach deep into the razzle dazzle bucket to pull out marvelous couture gowns never fails. And Broderick’s Henry Miller-esque wardrobe always brings a much-appreciated Old Hollywood glamour to red carpet events.

5. IMAN & DAVID BOWIE

Not only did Bowie introduce the look that Justin Timberlake is currently receiving standing fashion ovations for, but he could still get away with it to this day. Bowie makes men in their 60s dust off their leather jackets and tell themselves they’ve still got it. At 52, his stunning supermodel wife does the same for women. Iman refuses to shy away from a plunging neckline and always looks runway-ready. Both of them have a relentless edge that works for them — a rarity at their ages.
