Casual Chic

It seems Jessica Simpson has been in the midst of a style crisis lately. We suspect her love life is responsible.
Her old bouncy blonde locks, cotton candy pink party dresses and stiletto pumps perfectly complemented her one-time constant arm accessory, Nick Lachey, but not so much with John Mayer. That would be the singer whose arms are sans tattoos or bulging biceps. For Simpson, dating such an understated guy called for a style overhaul. Translation: auburn hair, bohemian dresses and the peace sign thrown up in paparazzi pictures to really throw us off.
Ironically enough, once her relationship with Mayer started to go sour, she finally managed to find a happy medium. As you can see here, the tresses lie somewhere between “The Girls Next Door” hue and her not-so-well-received red shade. The gear screams rock-n-roll, but not at Janis Joplin octaves. The vintage T-shirt, tight jeans and open-toe platforms collaborate to keep Simpson in chic territory. The accessories — one wrist stacked with various sized bangles, a pair of dangling earrings and oversized sunglasses — tell the world this singer may have temporarily switched gears in one aspect of her life, but she’s not ready to downshift her style just yet.
The lesson we can all take from this? A complete abandonment of self never makes for good style or, evidently, a happy relationship (Simpson and Mayer have called it quits). Had Simpson made her compromise earlier, we think more than just her fashion sense could have been saved.
