Skye Canyon holds inaugural Fit Fest

Las Vegas is now a major hub for outdoor recreation and fitness.

Skye Canyon, a 1,700-acre master-planned community in northwest Las Vegas, celebrates the lifestyle that is reshaping the city with its inaugural Fit Fest on March 19. The family-friendly day includes a running event; yoga; 30-mintue fitness classes, like Bootcamp Blast, DanceWorkz and Core Training; an artisanal marketplace; food vendors; and a kids rock climbing wall.

The second annual Skye Canyon 8K Trail Mix and 5K Road Run kicks off the day at 8 a.m. at Skye Canyon Park. Last year’s race attracted several hundred runners and walkers of all ages and ability levels. The 5K course travels through the neighborhoods of Skye Canyon, while the 8K race shares the same start, but then takes runners onto dirt trails.

The race benefits the Outside Las Vegas Foundation, and prizes are awarded to top finishers. Fit Fest is free, open to the public and does not require registration; runners and walkers, however, can find race pricing and register in advance for the Skye Canyon 8K Trail Mix and 5K Road Race at skyecanyon.com/race.

The Fit Fest Village at Skye Canyon Park includes an artisan-farmers’ market and outdoor expo that are open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Guests can enjoy a host of fitness-related activities, including a one-hour Silent Savasana yoga class at 10 a.m. Led by renowned yoga teacher Dray Gardner, Silent Savasana is enjoyed by experienced and first-time yogis.

Participants wear LED headsets that transmit Gardner’s voice and music. Because noise and distractions are blocked, yogis have a very personal experience with an increased ability to focus. The unique nature of this type of yoga earned Silent Savasana top honors in the Best Yoga/Pilates category of the Las Vegas Review-Journal’s 2016 Best of Las Vegas Awards. There is no fee for Silent Savasana, though yogis are encouraged to bring a mat.

The Fit Fest artisanal market features local vendors offering gifts and goodies such as Zeeta Body natural body care, spice blends from Spicy Camel Trading and items from The Pickled Pantry and Island Brittle. From 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., lunch and snacks will be available for purchase from local food truck vendors Slidin’ Thru and 50 Shades of Green.

The outdoor expo features a rock-climbing wall, nine-hole miniature golf course and a children’s obstacle course. Attendees can learn about local outdoor adventure opportunities from Desert Wildlife Refuge, Go Mt. Charleston and Friends of Nevada Wilderness and Lee Canyon.

Guests can tour Skye Canyon’s model homes to learn more about the community’s homebuilders, including Century Communities, Pardee Homes, Pulte Homes and Woodside Homes.
