Shriners Hospitals for Children Open returns to TPC Summerlin Oct. 31-Nov. 6

As the home of Nevada’s only two Tournament Players Club courses, seven other golf courses and a 1oth course under development, the master-planned community of Summerlin has long been a golfer’s paradise.

Beginning Oct. 31, the golf world turns its focus to Las Vegas when the PGA Tour brings its FedExCup tournament, the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open, to TPC Summerlin.

The event, in its 34th year in Las Vegas and 24th at TPC Summerlin, will draw more than 130 of the world’s top golf professionals to the city to compete for a $6.4 million purse, with the winner taking home more than $1 million.

The tournament, which runs through Nov. 6, has a rich history in Summerlin that began when it was first played at TPC Summerlin in 1992 as the Las Vegas Invitational.

In 1996, Tiger Woods won the tournament at age 20, marking his first PGA Tour victory.

“Summerlin is proud of its long history hosting the city’s only PGA Tour tournament,” said Kevin T. Orrock, president, Summerlin for The Howard Hughes Corp. “TPC Summerlin was among the community’s very first courses and continues to rank among the city’s best while simultaneously serving as the centerpiece to some of Summerlin’s premier luxury neighborhoods, including Eagle Hills and Tournament Hills. We welcome valley residents to join us for this fun sporting event and some great golf.”

The par-71, 7,223-yard TPC Summerlin course was designed by Bobby Weed and player consultant Fuzzy Zoeller. TPC Summerlin has been honored by Golf Digest as one of “America’s Best” courses and ranks as one of the “Top 100 Modern Golf Courses in the United States.”

Tournament play is Nov. 3 to 6. Tickets are available at shrinershospitalsopen.com.

Tournament officials are also treating first responders and military personnel to complimentary food and beverages inside its Birdies for the Brave Patriots’ Outpost on the ninth green. Military members will be honored Nov. 4 on Military Appreciation Day.

On Nov. 1, the annual Kick Off Your Heels Luncheon for women is held on The Hill overlooking the 18th green.

It features a keynote address by Rose McKinney-James, managing principal of Energy Works Consulting and McKinney-James &Associates.

McKinney-James is a seasoned small business leader and independent corporate director with a long history in public service, nonprofit volunteerism and private sector corporate social responsibility.

The event is hosted by Mercedes Martinez of KMXB-FM, 94.1’s Mercedes in the Morning, and features a lunch by Andiron Steak &Sea. For more information or to reserve a table, contact Corinne Spitzer at cspitzer@shrinershospitalsopen.com.

The tournament’s beneficiary is Shriners Hospitals for Children with 22 locations in the United States, Canada and Mexico that provide advanced care for children with orthopedic conditions, burns, spinal cord injuries and cleft lip and palate.
