Retired CPA trades in suburb for high-rise

Gloria Liu, originally from Taiwan, has enjoyed quite the adventure since moving to the United States in 1967. But today, she has only one objective — to enjoy life to the fullest. She recently purchased a one-bedroom home at One Las Vegas, the high-rise community south of the Las Vegas Strip, where she lives alone, yet finds companionship in her friendly neighbors and the community’s helpful staff.

Liu met her husband, John, shortly after moving to the states and they moved around a few times until settling in San Francisco, where John, an engineer, had accepted a job. Liu, who left Taiwan to further her education and obtain a Master of Business Administration degree, worked most of her life as a Certified Public Accountant. When the youngest of the couple’s three children left home to attend college in the 1990s, the Lius began thinking about retirement and finding a more appropriately sized home.

“When the kids were young, it was hard to travel, but once my husband and I were on our own again, we had more time to explore the world,” Liu said. “We frequently came to Las Vegas and ultimately fell in love with the city, and more importantly, the affordable cost of living and quality of life here.”

The Lius moved to Las Vegas in 2000 and purchased a single-family home near Aliante. After John passed away in 2006, Liu, 70, knew that her house was too large to maintain on her own, and she began touring smaller single-family houses around the valley.

“I liked the location of One Las Vegas, and while I wasn’t sure at first how I felt about living in a high-rise, I decided to give it a try,” Liu said. “I sold my house in 2013 and rented a two-bedroom home at One Las Vegas, and it didn’t take long for me to realize how convenient it was to live here. If I ever needed a maintenance repair or help with anything at all, the staff was responsive and always eager to assist. They made my life easier — so much so, that when I had the opportunity to terminate my lease and buy a home, I jumped at the chance.”

In September, Liu once again “right-sized” into a one-bedroom home at One Las Vegas.

“I spent years cleaning up a large home where my husband and I raised our three kids, and now, cleaning my one-bedroom home is so much more manageable,” she said. “If I want to go to the gym, all I have to do is take the elevator downstairs, and if I need groceries, there are stores just down the street. If I want to visit my children who still live in California, it’s only a short plane ride away. My only priority these days is to enjoy life, and that’s exactly what I’m doing, thanks to my new home at One Las Vegas!”

Of the twin 20-story towers, DK Las Vegas purchased 295 of the project’s 359 residences. Homes range from 831 to 2,857 square feet with many floor plans offering views of the mountains and the Strip. One-bedroom homes are priced from the low $200,000s; two-bedroom homes from the high $200,000s; and three-bedroom homes from the low $400,000s. The penthouse, offering 3,000 square feet of sweeping views, is priced at $1.1 million.

One Las Vegas is close to Interstate 15, the 215 Beltway and just minutes from McCarran International Airport. Town Square, just a few blocks north of the property, provides one-stop shopping and scores of dining and entertainment options right in the neighborhood.
