Providence to hold ice cream event Sunday

Giving back to the community has been embraced by Providence, Providence Master Homeowners Association and its residents since the master plan opened in 2006.

That philosophy has been reflected in support for nonprofits and those in need through various fundraising events and drives for needed items.

This continues with Sunday’s Sunny 106.5 Ice Cream Sunday that includes a book drive for the local Spread the Word Nevada.

Attendees to the free ice cream-themed event are invited to bring new and gently used books for the nonprofit organization, which advances early childhood literacy by placing books into the hands and homes of children within Southern Nevada’s at-risk, low-income communities.

While developing a love of reading, the initiative promotes future academic achievement and self-confidence to help impact children’s lifelong success.

After four years of partnership and more than 10,000 books donated, Spread the Word Nevada is a part of the Providence community.

The Providence Master Homeowners Association’s ongoing Fill the Bookcase campaign makes it easy for residents to get involved by stopping by the association office to donate books or collecting books at its various events.

Once the designated bookcase is full, the books are given to Spread the Word Nevada and the cycle begins again.

The literary theme also is reflected in the names of two of Providence’s parks. The new Huckleberry Park, where Ice Cream Sunday is being held, was inspired by the classic Mark Twain character Huckleberry Finn. Knickerbocker Park was named in honor of literary great Washington Irving, whose 19th century “Knickerbocker Tales” include “Rip Van Winkle” and “The Headless Horseman.”

Ice Cream Sunday will be from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. with free frozen treats from Meadow Gold, ice cream-eating contests, a petting zoo, a DJ and entertainment by Amazing Clowns.

Booths include America First Credit Union, Pinot’s Palette, Shelters Insurance, The Smith Center and Victory Martial Arts. Food trucks, featuring Ben’s BBQ, Blondie’s Beacon Creations and Burgerfest, will have various delectables to purchase.

The Sunny 106.5 Ice Cream Sunday is being presented by Sunny 106.5, Meadow Gold, Providence and Providence Master Homeowners Association.
