Superfan turns down ‘Breaking Bad’ spoiler, dies before series finale
The latest episode of AMC’s hit series Breaking Bad ended with a heartfelt dedication to “superfan” Kevin Cordasco, who lost a battle to cancer in March.
The 16-year-old fought neuroblastoma, a form of cancer, for nearly half of his life–something that might have inspired his connection to the show and its similarly afflicted lead character, Walter White.
“He and his friends watched it obsessively and ate pizza in his bedroom,” Cordasco’s father told The Hollywood Reporter. “There was something about the Walter White character; the way he took control of his illness, and his life, that really resonated with Kevin.”
Before Cordasco died, he was able to meet the show’s creator, Vince Gilligan, and its series star, Bryan Cranston, as well as several other cast members. The opportunity was a massive deal to the Calabasas, Calif. teen.
Melissa Bernstein, the show’s co-executive producer, told the Los Angeles Daily News that the dedication to Cordasco was Gilligan’s idea.
“It was just heartwarming,” Melodie Cordasco, Kevin’s mom, told the Daily News about the episode dedication. “I know my son was sitting there, watching it, (saying) ‘Mom, look, I made it!’ It was overwhelming. The feeling, the love and support.”
Before Cordasco died, Gilligan offered him the answer to Breaking Bad fans’ most sought-after question: how does the show end?
Gilligan told listeners of “Breaking Bad Insiders Podcast” the only condition he gave the teen was that he could not tell anyone.
But in true superfan form, Cordasco refused the answer, stating that he wanted to learn Walter White’s fate at the same time as the rest of the viewers.
Unfortunately Cordasco lost his battle with cancer before the final season, but the opportunity to meet Breaking Bad creator and cast members “meant the world to him,” Melodie Cordasco told the Daily News.
On the teen’s bucket list was “to meet Breaking Bad,” his mother said. And that he did.
