Tower of Power’s cult following to get full package this weekend

Tower of Power is a band that defines “cult following.” It’s able to fill small showrooms such as the South Point 40 years after “So Very Hard to Go” was played on Top 40 radio.

Still, it never hurts to get back into an amphitheater or large concert hall. This year, Tower is giving early arrivals to the double-bill of Journey and the Steve Miller Band a half-hour refresher course on its horn-powered funk and R&B.

That package tour visits Mandalay Bay Events Center on Aug. 1. But Tower fans get the full show this weekend at the South Point.

Tower’s ongoing affiliation with the local Lon Bronson All-Stars led to the live album “Doc Goes Vegas,” recorded at Green Valley Ranch Resort in late 2011. Baritone sax man Stephen “Doc” Kupka and five other members of Tower reworked favorites including “Credit” and “Keep Your Monster On a Leash” with the local heroes.

Bronson says he and Kupka plan to work on songs for “Doc Goes Vegas II” this weekend.
