Whoopi doesn’t get GOP animosity

The Hollywood Reporter recently polled Republicans about their least-favorite liberal stars. The "winners" were three women: Jane Fonda (48 percent hate her); Whoopi Goldberg (47 percent) and Oprah Winfrey (46 percent).

Whoopi is performing tonight at Treasure Island. So I informed her of the poll.

"What is the issue they have with me?" she said and laughed.

"Well, you know, when (Republicans) try to (screw) the people, I’m gonna mention it."

You can see why Republicans don’t like Whoopi when she says things to me such as: Their current presidential candidates seem "barely literate."

On the other hand, Whoopi swears she’s "middle of the road."

"I believe in choice — and I also have a shotgun, which is registered, by the way," she said.

I told her some of my liberal friends want her to slam Elisabeth Hasselbeck, her conservative "View" comrade.

But she’s having none of it. "Lizzy" is her friend.

"What’s better than having a friend who disagrees with you, but you can still be their friend?" she said.

"I have liberal friends I wouldn’t spend more than 10 minutes with because they’re so annoying. But I can spend time with Lizzy and her family because I love them. They’re great people."

And that’s Whoopi’s view today: She wishes liberals and conservatives would calm down for a minute.

"I don’t know when it got so weird that we couldn’t have opinions without it being an accusatory thing, like, ‘You’re not really American or Christian.’ I mean, what the (expletive), man?"
