Strip Tips: Danger, intrigue and a full tank of water
Magician Dan Sperry will try to escape drowning in a tank full of water at 7 p.m. Saturday at Fright Dome in Circus Circus. The shock-illusionist won’t have an easy time of it, though. His hands and legs will be bound by Smith & Wesson shackles. He will be chained in place with industrial padlocks and will have only three minutes to free himself. If he doesn’t, he will either drown or be impaled on a row of spikes that will shoot from above. This will be one trick fraught with danger and excitement. Art exhibit
If you haven’t had a chance to see "Da Vinci — The Genius" exhibit at The Venetian, you’re in luck. The exhibit, originally slated to close this month, has been extended through January. You can check out the "Secrets of Mona Lisa" display, which reveals the true color of the original painting as well as several fascinating facts about it. The exhibit also displays replicas of Leonardo da Vinci’s inventions, including a deep-water diving suit and several machines that were meant to be used by the military. Also on display is a replica of a bronze cast of a da Vinci sculpture called "Horse and Rider." The exhibit is open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily. Tickets are available at the box office or online at venetian.com. Adult admission is $20 for Nevada residents with ID; children younger than 12 are $18.
Pink fountain
In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Miracle Mile Shops at Planet Hollywood Resort has turned its fountain pink. Between regularly scheduled shows, the fountain will have a pink tint to it. All coins tossed in it and in the mall’s rainstorm fountain will be collected and donated to the Southern Nevada chapter of Susan G. Komen for the Cure. Show times are at the top of every hour from noon to 11 p.m.
Chocolate skeleton
Bellagio’s Jean Philippe Patisserie will get you in the Halloween mood with its life-size chocolate and fondant skeleton. It took the hotel’s pastry team 70 hours to create the spooky treat, complete with gold teeth. More than 130 pounds of white and dark chocolate went into the creation, which measures 5 feet, 5 inches and is displayed on a chocolate electric chair. The patisserie is near the conservatory in the Bellagio.
Firefighter challenge
Today and Saturday, firefighters will race up the Stratosphere in the "toughest two minutes in sports." They will don full gear and try to beat their fellow firefighters in a race through an obstacle course in an effort to raise money for charity. The Scott Firefighter Combat Challenge is free to the public. There will be several activities for kids, including a chance to use a fire hose. The event is scheduled for 4 to 8 p.m. today and 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. For more information, call 380-7777.
