Strip Tips: Cowboys and a wax Bradley Cooper hit the Strip

Welcome to Strip Tips, a column about the Las Vegas Strip. That’s probably obvious from the name, “Strip Tips,” and the illustration above.

What’s not so obvious is the purpose of this column. In a nutshell: I will attempt to inform you about the Strip every Friday in this space.

Now, I know what you’re thinking. “The Strip is mighty big,” you’re saying. “Lots of stuff happens there every day. You’re going to inform me about the whole Strip in a few hundred words each week?”

No. I won’t even try.

Instead, I plan to tell you about things that I think you will find infinitely interesting or useful. These will be things you might want to do on the Strip or things you might want to know.

For instance, a few months ago, Tacos and Tequila at the Luxor was hosting human rooster fights. People like you and me donned chicken feet and rooster beaks and duked it out in the restaurant. That right there is an important piece of information. Who doesn’t want to participate in a human rooster fight? Or at least watch it?

Usually, I would write a story about such a momentous event, since I cover the culture of the Strip for the R-J (you can probably tell that by my Twitter handle, @StripSonya). But there are many times, as in the case of the human rooster fights, that I can’t write a feature because of the timing. That’s where Strip Tips: The Column comes in. So, let’s get to it.

Saddle up!

The rodeo is in town until Dec. 10 and the MGM Grand is going all out. The hotel’s Centrifuge bar will host the “Crown Royal Gold Buckle Zone,” where the gold buckles and saddles of eight-time all-around champ Trevor Brazile will be displayed. From 2 to 3 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday, Brazile and 25 other cowboys will be in the MGM Grand lobby signing autographs. All of it is free.

Sexiest Man in wax

If you’re a fan of actor Bradley Cooper or you like wax, you can get 30 percent off admission ($25 adults, $18 seniors) at Madame Tussauds at The Venetian through Sunday. All you have to do is bring a copy of the People magazine that features Cooper as “2011’s Sexiest Man Alive” to the box office. Cooper even has his own wax figure on display. If you’re a local, you can get 50 percent off admission through the holidays by showing your Nevada ID (madametussauds.com).

Questions

In Strip Tips, I will also answer questions that readers have about the Strip. So, send me your questions. Ever wondered how long the Strip is and why it’s called “The Strip” and not just Las Vegas Boulevard? Or what Strip activities are really family-friendly? How about what hotels allow pets? Or maybe you’re wondering why actor Bradley Cooper has a wax figure in Madame Tussauds and Vegas diva Frank Marino doesn’t?

If you want a question answered, you can tweet it (@StripSonya), send it through Facebook (sonyapadgett) or email me (spadgett@reviewjournal.com).

But wait, there’s more. Not only will you learn about activities on the Strip, you can also teach me and readers what you know. It must pertain to the Strip, though. So if you have any Strip tips of your own, send those along, too. I may use them in future columns.
